Active Culture

Erik Guzman May 5th, 2007

Join us this week as we talk with author Dick Staub about his book, The Culturally Savvy Christian: A Manifesto for Deepening Faith and Enriching Popular Culture in an Age of Christianity-Lite. Here's a blurb on the book from dickstaub.com…

"In this incisive critique of contemporary culture and religion, Dick Staub concludes that though it is influential, American popular culture is generally superficial & soulless.

Similarly American Christianity has devolved into its own mindless, diversionary, and celebrity-driven superficiality.

We face the lose-lose alternatives of a soul-numbing culture and a vacuous Christianity-lite.

The renaissance of both faith and culture will originate in a deep spiritual renewal that creates a new breed of culturally savvy, thoughtful creatives who rekindle the spiritual, intellectual, and creative legacy of Christians as enrichers of culture."

Are you drowning in the shallow end of the pool? Don't miss this show.

After listening to this podcast, I've been thinking about what my church could do differently to REALLY reach people.

And since I have a gift of apologetics, I got to thinking about what I could do differently to truly invest God's gifting in my life.

So, why not our church (and others) host a monthly coffee house style meeting where skeptics of atheist, agnostic or other religious stripes could congregate and hash out the issues with believers?

I'm seriously thinking about this idea and would be interested in others' thoughts on the specifics.

Would this idea work best if it was structured to be a monthly debate between a believer and a non-believer and then open up for Q&A and discussion?

Or would it be better structured as a casual place/event for conversation on these matters?

Although the nationally known apologetic speakers, and Christian books and the internet/blogosphere are making efforts to engage the skeptically minded among us, I don't see the local church doing ANYTHING in this area of witnessing.
