Immigration

Steve Brown May 22nd, 2007

I'm often frustrated and angry. This morning my frustration and anger are directed at the immigration bill now working its way through congress.

I was reading Jonah Goldberg's comments this morning. It's a good piece and, among other things, he talked about matters of trust. In particular, he was talking about how President Bush's constituency doesn't trust him on matters of immigration.

I've thought about it and that's my problem too, to wit, I don't trust hardly anybody and certainly nobody in Washington.

One of my favorite writers is P.J. O'Rourke. The title of his early nineties book, Parliament of Whores, kind of reflects my view. O'Rourke has said, "A little government and a little luck are necessary in life, but only a fool trusts either of them." And one other: "The mystery of government is not how Washington works, but how to get it to stop."

It really is a matter of trust.

The Hispanics don't trust the Anglo politicians; the Democrats don't trust the Republicans; the Republicans don't trust the Democrats; the unions don't trust the Hispanics, the Democrats or the Republicans; the African Americans don't trust the system; the conservatives don't trust the liberals and the liberals just wish the conservatives would go away.

It's all about power, votes and money in Washington, and I don't trust any of them.

But I do trust Jesus and, it seems to me, in the area of immigration it is not inappropriate to ask the overused question about what Jesus would do.

He would be street-smart. He called us to be "as innocent as a dove and as wise as a serpent."

He would be realistic. He admonished his disciples because "the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light."

He would be compassionate. "He saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd."

He would be egalitarian and without bigotry. Jesus reached across all kinds of borders and when he addressed the Samaritan woman, she was surprised because, as John said, "Jews have no dealings with Samaritans."

And, frankly, Jesus wouldn't care dink about power, money or votes.

Sounds like you support a fence to keep out terrorists and a program to get in legitamate workers with real pay. Maybe we could include some english lessons for those who come across to work to improve communication and reduce the us vs. them mentality so prevelant here in California (and a few other states from my understanding). Of course that would require love, cooperation, and serious thought from our government – I'm not holding my breath. Looks like we'll have to trust GOD to deal with this one :) .

Amen!

Trust in Him and His example is all we got!

I see both sides and niether are hocky proof. The pro amnesty guys don't treat the security issue as that big of a deal, which it is. The con amnesty guys don't really see just how much expunging all of the illegals from this country will do to things like basic food prices….which it will….big time.

I don't trust government any more than I can recite the constitution in Syriac. But then I do not envy their job at all, either. In the end, we will all figure out faith is our only hope, one way or the other.

One of my favorite movies is Raising Arizona….one of the characters in that movie was trying to kidnap the baby from the kidnappers, to collect reward money. As he was approaching the kidnapper with child in hand, he looked at him seriously and said, "This can go hard or easy."

Same thing applies to everything, with trust….immigration issue is case in point, IMO.

I agree, Washington isn't to be trusted, liberal or conservative. There has to be a way to keep out the terrorists but let the people who want to honestly come here and work do so, we have a lot we can spread it around, if we can do it fairly and safely. I don't think most americans want to get rid of the immigrants who come here to work at some of the lower paying jobs such as farm workers, isn't it really the ones who sneek in with intent of harming and destroying this country that we should worry about first. We should have some compasion for the poor working farming families but we shouldn't allow that compasion to cary over to the dangerous terrorists and drug traficers that use the same border. Just a thought.

Apparently DINK is short for "Dual Income No Kids" (per urbandictionary.com).

I am a systems professional with over 20 years experience. Weve been watching the effects of the h1b and L-1 visas on our employment situation for years. A form of immigration that doesn't get talked about much, but has put thousands of US workers out of a job, and now the big tech companies are hiring more lobbyists to buy more politicians to raise the cap on h1b hires.

These visa hires have also had the effect of "dumbing down" IT and engineering salaries. The visa workers make 10-25% less than the same US worker on the same job. The other side of the coin has been the outsourcing of jobs overseas to third world countries – again govenrment subsidizes by tax loop holes. Salaries are a fraction of what they'd pay in the US. You probably have had some experience with "help desks" in other countries – mine have not been pleasent.

So here we have our own government paying our businesses to employ non US citizens with our own tax dollars. These businesses which gladly live in the US, use our health care, transportation, and law enforcement infrastructures that we all pay for with our tax dollars. They are our neighbors but yet they have no qualms about moving jobs and income elsewhere to make a buck for themselves. We live in this big community called The United States of America. Don't you think these "global" businesses ought to remember their back yards and neighborhoods first? Please don't tell me its a global community. That sounds like something out of "LEFT BEHIND" The trade imbalance squashes that whole global concept – it is not equal trade by a long shot and folks you and I aren't benefiting by it.

Ive seen the heartbreak and the depression caused by these practices with some of my peers. I've heard of programmers with 20 years experince being forced to train their visa replacement if they wanted their severance pay. This practice needs to stop.

I wrote a song called Mad in America and its out there on the web – its also in the hands of a half dozen or more US Congressmen and Senators including one whos running for President. http://www.madnamerica.com The stories in the first (my grandfather) and third (a programmer I met) verses are true and about real people. the second is poetic license but a composit of real events.

Lastly but not leastly – yes God is in control but he didn't give us hands to sit on.

Illegal immigration needs to be stopped.

Seize Mexico's assets and use them to build a prison in the coldest part of Alaska.

Seize the assets of any illegal caught to help pay for it.

Hold them for a couple of years, then deport them back to where they came from.

Once word gets around that sneaking into the US will get you harsh prison time, it will stop.

Frankly, it's so bad now that I'd suggest treating them like the invaders that they are. Put up a wall and man it with Marines. Tell them it's the Tet Offensive Part II and the problem will be taken care of pretty quickly.

Liberals love to say that this is a country of immigrants. It's not. The vast, vast majority of Americans were born here and this is our country.

They also claim that the illegals are coming here to pursue the "American Dream". They're not.

First of all, if they were after the American Dream, then they'd have enough respect for Americas laws to follow them.

They'd have enough respect for America's culture to assimilate.

They would actually go out and work.

It all boils down to the concept of SIN that has immigrated. If it's gone to Croatia, then you have something to discuss. Otherwise, the most rigid Bible study can't produce the kind of results we desire.

Is it "mommy" or "momma"?
