Immigration
Steve Brown May 22nd, 2007
I'm often frustrated and angry. This morning my frustration and anger are directed at the immigration bill now working its way through congress.
I was reading Jonah Goldberg's comments this morning. It's a good piece and, among other things, he talked about matters of trust. In particular, he was talking about how President Bush's constituency doesn't trust him on matters of immigration.
I've thought about it and that's my problem too, to wit, I don't trust hardly anybody and certainly nobody in Washington.
One of my favorite writers is P.J. O'Rourke. The title of his early nineties book, Parliament of Whores, kind of reflects my view. O'Rourke has said, "A little government and a little luck are necessary in life, but only a fool trusts either of them." And one other: "The mystery of government is not how Washington works, but how to get it to stop."
It really is a matter of trust.
The Hispanics don't trust the Anglo politicians; the Democrats don't trust the Republicans; the Republicans don't trust the Democrats; the unions don't trust the Hispanics, the Democrats or the Republicans; the African Americans don't trust the system; the conservatives don't trust the liberals and the liberals just wish the conservatives would go away.
It's all about power, votes and money in Washington, and I don't trust any of them.
But I do trust Jesus and, it seems to me, in the area of immigration it is not inappropriate to ask the overused question about what Jesus would do.
He would be street-smart. He called us to be "as innocent as a dove and as wise as a serpent."
He would be realistic. He admonished his disciples because "the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light."
He would be compassionate. "He saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd."
He would be egalitarian and without bigotry. Jesus reached across all kinds of borders and when he addressed the Samaritan woman, she was surprised because, as John said, "Jews have no dealings with Samaritans."
And, frankly, Jesus wouldn't care dink about power, money or votes.
