i love celebrating halloween… i guess i'm headed for hell then… well, if that's the case, i'm going all out this year… maybe dress as "the old white guy", pipe included…

That was one weird accent. Reminded me just a little of a poor relation of the accent used by Tom Hanks in The Ladykillers. Now that whispering female "Sssssmiiiiite… " was scary. This comedy bit provoked a couple of quiet chuckles, but it's one I'll listen to again.

Oh yeah, by "poor relation," I didn't mean the accent'd been poorly done. It was really good. I meant it was literally a poor relation to the Tom Hanks accent – that is, it lives in a neighborhood that's awaiting 'gentrification,' and knows all about how jumper cables work, and may think a seminary is to bulls what a dairy is to cows. It really is a funny bit, and the whispering female smiteress really lends it an air of creepiness.

In response to The House of Smite…. Halloween is harmless. The little kids do not worship satan, & they don't know, (nor would they even care) about the so-called history. It's a FUN time for them to dress up & pretend, a fringe benefit…some candy. Lighten up.

Seems strange that we would think kids were going to hell just because of a little dress up and candy. While yes I agree that in many ways Halloween has dark overtones I do not think that the entire event of trick or treating is included in that. A holiday is just a day like any other that someone or something… perhaps corporate America has turned into much more. Some churches are even doing trunk or treats to keep kids off the streets… so what are those pastors and churches going to hell for that?

I think this comedy bit was intended to mock those who believe and want you to believe that Halloween is a big serious bad threat to the spiritual well-being of people who enjoy dressing up in costumes and playing basically innocent games in exchange for candy.

I always love it whenever some church people say, "we don't celebrate Halloween. Instead we have an Autumn Festival." I would always ask them to explain it to me and then I would reply, "Oh, so you don't let your kids dress up on Oct. 31 and get candy for Halloween. you do it for an Autumn Fesitval." But my all time favorite is "trunk or treak". WHAT???? Is that a give me some candy or I'll put you in a trunk? Ok, I am going back into my box now.

The folks at our congregation have traditionally held a "Reformation Day" activity where the little kids dress as Bible characters. They play games and are given candy. I thought it was pretty funny.

Let me see if I've got this straight now….we've got a some commercialized "Christian" reaction of harvest festivals and reality houses that are in reaction to a big commercial costume and candy "holiday" that playfully evolved out of an unofficial evil holiday, that came out of a Christian mostly Catholic celebration of all the saints of God.

Also somewhere in this mess there's some kind of explanation that means people who do pagan-like things such as painting eggs and having sunrise services are actually celebrating Christian resurrection, whereas people who dress up funny and collect candy are celebrating the devil.

You know what? When my computer starts doing stuff like that, I usually hit ctrl-alt-delete and just get it over with.

I guess the House of smite was lost on me. Someone bleeding to death from a papercut receieved while looking at a swimsuit magazine is not only an unoriginal idea–its just not funny. WHo was the spoof REALLY on? Also I'm having a difficult time understanding who knows less about Halloween–the House of Smite producers, the pagans, or Christians. Doesn't really matter, I guess. It was not funny and it smacked of Holier than Thou obnoxiousness.

I wouldn't die on this hill. All the years we used to Halloween it didn't have any effect on me . My first costume back in 1964 was of an Astronaut.I have a six year old and he is going as a skeleton warrior/whatever that is? We try to make it fun to dress up and don't get heavy with all the Pagan stuff.AS long as our kids are safe from the weirdo's of the world all is good.God is still in control and he knows our hearts.

Responding to Nanette who said "lighten up", how could you get any lighter? I think it was hilarious. I used to preach about the dark Druid demon holiday of Samhain. Since then, I "lightned up." I think it's cool to make light of something old what's his name meant to be a big deal at one time.
