The Philosophy of Fake News

Erik Guzman November 2nd, 2007

On October 16, Stephen Colbert, the mock conservative pundit and host of The Colbert Report, announced he was running for president as a Democrat and Republican. That run seems to have been cut short, but not before thrusting fake news onto the national political stage.

Programs like The Daily Show and The Colbert Report have attained undeniable cultural significance. Is that cause for concern or celebration?

Join Steve and the gang as we talk to professor of philosophy, Jason Holt, about his book The Daily Show and Philosophy: Moments of ZEN in the Art of Fake News. Want the real deal on fake news? Want to know how Jon Stewart stacks up against public intellectuals past and present? Or how far down Stephen Colbert's irony goes? Then start clicking.

Holt was an interesting guest, but you guys kept telling him not to answer as a philosopher. I think that was hard for him. He was a good sport and tried to play along. The guy was so softspoken I had trouble hearing him a couple of times.

It was nice to actually hear Battaglia (sp?) after having heard his name so many times. What's he do in New York that Erik can't do from the glass booth in Florida?

Happy Saturday,

"Is that cause for concern or celebration?"

To me, I think it's both. It's a cause for concern, I think, because people are relying more and more on the Colbert Report and Daily Show in lieu of news channels like CNN and Fox News because they have been turned off by the hypocrisy of the mainstream news channels. Colbert and Steward embrace that hypocrisy through humor (like you said, Steve), and this makes their news reporting more reliable because people know that Colbert and Stewart are being honest (in a roundabout way).

At the same time, I think it's a cause for celebration because you have two hosts that are not afraid to take shots at, and poke fun at, political and national figures because they know what they're talking about. As was mentioned, Jon Stewart knows what he's talking about and isn't afraid to show that outside of his show, while Colbert keeps his personal life separate from his show persona. Colbert teaches Sunday School in real life, but you wouldn't think of that while watching his show. And this willingness and ability to poke fun while being serious is a strong asset to our country because it allows us to take time off from the seriousness of politics and leadership and take a look at the other side of it.

It's too bad the writer's strike has stopped the fake news shows…they have some of the best comedy on TV.
