A New Kind of Conservative

Erik Guzman February 29th, 2008

If you're a politically conservative Christian, but feel misrepresented by the Religious Right, don't miss this week's Steve Brown Etc. Conservative spokesman, author and pastor Dr. Joel Hunter joined us to talk about his new book, A New Kind of Conservative.

Dr. Hunter holds traditional biblical stands on abortion and homosexuality, but is at the same time seeking to expand the political discussion to include other biblical concerns, such as poverty, justice issues, the environment and AIDS. Use one of the options below to listen.

In addition to Joel Hunter, Tony Campolo also makes an appearance on the program to talk about how his new book, Red Letter Christians, and A New Kind of Conservative compliment each other.

Don't let the Grand Mufti get you down, guys. "C"hristian religious professionals have a special hat they, too, frequently don during public appearances:
http://www.mtannoyances.com/?p=341 A simpler, less dignified form of that hat is available to those in the congregation wishing adorn their tetes in like manner. Ettiquette and orthopraxy demand, however, that both forms of the chapeau are doffed prior to and during prayer, even if the feminine form of the bonnet is worn by the woman (it is not considered a suitable or appropriate prayer-covering as set forth in Corinthian mandate prescribing same) and this is only right, as all will agree.

Here's something interesting I found linked on Campolo's webpage:

Government's consistently failing to make taxpayers out tax-consumers, and it looks like the church, that is, the body of Christ, as opposed to the system of denominationally funded brick-shoeboxes blighting the landscape, will have to step up and take action as this nation sinks into the morass of third-world people's republic status.

I expected Dr. Joel Hunter to be wearing that special hat described above, but was pleasantly surprised to find that he was not, at least not audibly, wearing one. Guys, keep surprising me like that!

Er, that should be, "out of tax-consumers."

Wonderful show, although I hoped we would have got a bit more dirt about Dr. Hunter's departure from the Christian Coalition. Alas. This particular episode was one of those cases where I just thought there wasn't nearly enough time.

"He looks like a girl" – awesome! (You have to play that clip for the interview)
