The Year of Living Biblically – A.J. Jacobs on SBE

Erik Guzman April 11th, 2008

Before and AfterJoin us on SBE this week along with our guest A.J. Jacobs as we discuss his book, The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible.

What happens when an agnostic journalist and author in New York City sets out to follow over 700 Biblical rules as literally as possible for an entire year? We're talking everything from the Ten Commandments to obscure stuff like not wearing clothing of mixed fiber, not shaving the sides of his beard and blowing a horn on the first of every month. Thou shalt use one of the options below to listen and find out!

A.J. is editor at large of Esquire and author of the New York Times bestseller The Know-It-All. Click here to see pictures of Jacobs' extreme spiritual makeover.

And thanks to Leo Nevilo for the Beastie Boys remixes we used as bumper!

This was a great interview. After reading the book it was nice to hear A.J.'s voice and find he's just as funny and profound in person as in his book. I hope he develops a relationship with Jesus, but I'll read his next book even if he doesn't.

Parental Advisory: Theologically conservative Presbyterian denomination's codeword used infra…

I listened to this with my own five-week old son this morning. We both enjoyed the interview. I'm probably going to buy the book and read it to El Ninito during his intervals of quiet-alert time.

Now, I've tried to shelter him from scary stuff, but last weekend at Barnchurch the pastor preached Isaiah 13 – 14:2. Pretty scary for an infant, good thing he doesn't know all the words and slept through most of it.

Then, this morning, we're listening to this long anticipated interview with A.J. Jacobs, and what does Steve Brown say out loud on a podcast? I'll tell you what the old guy said – he said "winsome." Mind you, I'm not saying it's cause and effect, because who can divine the mysteries of infantile digestion, but I will say the little guy expelled some semi-curdled milk shortly thereafter. I comforted him as best I could.

And we did sing along to the cowboy song at the end of the show.

Happy birthday, Erik.

I have a question… did he follow the part where it said,

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and all your strength and all your mind and all your soul?
