Etcetera – 10.28.08 – Communion in Weakness

Erik Guzman October 29th, 2008

Ill miss you GrandpaSorry there weren't any Etcetera podcasts last week. My grandpa died and I was out of town at the funeral. Join me on this podcast as I talk about the blessing that belongs to those who mourn.

(If you're on the front page of the site, click "Read More" to see audio player options.)

Here are some links that came up in this show…

- Win the DVD of the new movie The Good Life at Society's Elite

- Internet Monk Halloween Rant – Don't miss the iMonk on this week's SBE

- Popular Steve Brown Etc. programs Archive 1 and Archive 2 – Take one down and pass it around!

- The author of The Shack on SBE

Also, here's a link to a video of my grandpa 8 years ago. Thanks to Brad Sucks and Lauris Vidal for providing music for this podcast. And finally, a heads up…there won't be a live Etcetera show Wednesday afternoon.

You have my sympathy for your loss, Erik.

I only knew one of my grandfathers. The other died before I was born and I was given his name. I visited the other just before going to the Middle East as a missionary. He told me that he wasn't sure which of us would be in heaven first, but that he was pretty sure that visit would be the last time we saw each other in this life. It was.

Take care, brother.

Erik,

Thanks for sharing the video, that brought back memories of times at my grandfather's farm in Texas. I didn't get to spend as much time as I'd have liked with my grandpa's but they were in my life and were a blessing even if for a short time.

Some day I'll catch one of these pod casts live. Until then, I'll enjoy the mp3 version. :-)

Tony Heringer October 29th, 2008

Erik,

Wow! Thanks for being so transparent. I really appreciate that about you. I'm bummed now that I didn't get to call in yesterday. Sounded like you needed a caller to rap with. Hang in there bro!

Obed October 29th, 2008

My condolences, Erik. I was out of town last week for my grandmother's funeral, so I can dig how it must've been for ya. She'd been suffering with cancer for a very long time, so it was a relief to know that she's out of pain and with Jesus. But dang, the family drama that accompanied all this stuff. She had almost nothing, but still folks fought over the little she had. I'm told that's pretty normal, but I'm still amazed at the pettiness and greed that showed itself.

My Condolences Erik. My Grandfather died at the end of August. Grandfathers are very special. Mine was a preacher who ministered to the very end in his nursing home, even having many physical set backs is is last years. He is a real inspriation to us. I havent listened to the show yet, but I hope that your Grandfather was an insiration to your family as well…

Tracy October 29th, 2008

Great show Erik! Your self awareness amazes me. It's quite cool that you could minister to your family during that difficult time.

Condolences to you, Erik, as well as Obed and Greg. And, thanks again Erik.

Jordo October 29th, 2008

I feel ya man. Lament brother!

THE PHILLIES WON THE FRIGGIN' WORLD SERIES! ROCK ON!

My team finally doesn't suck! Take that New York!

shelly October 29th, 2008

:( That sucks. I'm sorry.

Chemical Erik October 31st, 2008

Glad to hear your voice again. It sounds like you've got some serious growing pains. Becoming a spiritual giant doesn't look easy – that's why I'm so short ;)

I'm one of those statistics….just one of those folks that downloads the Etc. podcast & SBE podcast. But this statistic wanted to tell you that the 10.28.08 was probably your best podcast to date. Don't ever let yourself believe you are "just" a disc jockey. Awesome show. Thanks!

Erik October 31st, 2008

Thank you for your condolences and encouragement.

Speaking as Erik's impostor, I must say that I've put Erik back in his hole, but I may let him out again if you keep affirming expressions of his weakness.

Seriously, grace and peace to you, and thanks for sharing time with me in this mess. Peace.

Tony Heringer November 4th, 2008

Erik,

No podcast today or am I being bedeviled by RealAudio again? Bummer if the latter is true. I'll check in next week though and probably on Friday.

Marcia November 5th, 2008

Okay, feeling crappy about my smarta** Facebook message now that I've actually listened.

I can't even tell you how that spoke to me. Thank you for putting it out there.

Erik November 5th, 2008

Don't feel crappy Marcia. I didn't take any offense at all. I'm just glad for another opportunity to connect with someone in weakness. Much of the time for me that means laughter in the graveyard.

Erik November 5th, 2008

Hey Tony,

Yeah, no podcast yesterday, but Hurk is coming in today and we'll stream it live at noon EST. Come on over. 1.888.547.8383.

Marcia November 6th, 2008

First of all, as an Irish lass, please have Mr. Brown podcast more about his trip.

(But I agree–Guinness = ewww.)

Second, I keep pondering what you said, Erik. It's as though you climbed into my head.

Billy Joel did it first, though. When was the last time you listened to The Stranger?

Yikes, I hate to be a comment hog, but I forgot to ask: Are there written transcripts of the podcasts hanging around somewhere?

Erik November 7th, 2008

Are there written transcripts of the podcasts hanging around somewhere?

There aren't, but what a wonderful thought.
