Erik Guzman November 14th, 2008

You down with M.P.T.? Yeah you know me!If you've responded to more than one altar call in your life, or if you're scared Jesus might come back while you're going to the bathroom, or if you have friends and family that drive you nuts with their religion, don't miss this edition of Steve Brown Etc. Use one of the options below to listen.

(On the front page of the site? Click "Read More" to see audio player options.)

Matthew Paul Turner joined us on SBE this week to talk about growing up in a fundamentalist church and family where even contemporary Christian music was condemned as "of the devil." His new book, Churched: One Kid's Journey Toward God Despite a Holy Mess, is a funny and painful account of how his faith made it through alive.

Matthew is the author of a bunch of books including The Christian Culture Survival Guide and The Coffeehouse Gospel. He's a former editor of CCM and he blogs at MatthewPaulTurner.com.

Charles Spurgeon on "Freedom"
Sermon: "Spiritual Liberty"
Feb 18th 1855

"Some people say, "Then, sir, you mean to say that Christians may live as they like." I wish they could, sir. If I could live as I liked, I would, always live holily. If a Christian could live as he liked, he would always live as he ought. It is a slavery to him to sin; righteousness is his delight. Oh! if I could but live as I list, I would list to live as I ought. If I could but live as I would I would live as God commands me. The greatest happiness of a Christian is to be holy. It is no slavery to him. Put him where you will, he will not sin, Expose him to any temptation, if it were not for that evil heart still remaining, you would never find him sinning. Holiness is his pleasure; sin is his slavery. "

Brown.. I LOVE your preaching on Freedom. I'm sorry that You had to go SO far as to call your "Scandalous Freedom" Book and podcast "Scandalous" Because as i read Spurgeons sermon titled "Spiritual Liberty", your teaching on freedom that i once thought was scandalous, seems a bit mild and watered down… LoL HA HA HA! Just kidding… sort of.

But KEEP AT IT! MAN! i was HURTING like you wouldn't believe… searching the bible for this truth of freedom. And more people NEED … that is MORE CHRISTIANS need to know about this Freedom! The imputed Righteousness of Christ JESUS! :D

KEEP SPREADING THE MESSAGE!
P.S. I HATE mysticism and contemplative thinking
It scares me more than anyone will ever know, and i don't like that willard character… gives me the willies!

P.S.S. I feel good, RELIEVED to know that i'm not the only one that has ever felt like running away from Christianity…
But you know what i found out?

I wasn't trying to Run from Jesus… I was running from my sins, and from the Law, and From religion…

Keep confessing how messed up you are and be honest!
Cuz it helped me ALOT! (Spurgeon did, and it makes me feel relieved! I'm sick of pretending to be better than i really am, you know what i mean? We're ALL hurting… Let's all just help eachother! stop pointing fingers and GAsping at my struggles!

If you're a size 48" Stop wearing a size 40"!!! You're killin' yourself and everyone around you! you know?!

YOU think about that… and keep preaching, and Teaching… and being open and honest! I won't blush, or shame you… and i won't laugh… well, maybe i'll laugh, HA HA!

May the Lord continue to Bless you Steve, And your crew! :D

Alex,

Thanks for the Spurgeon excerpt. I've been fond of this quote:

"The truth is like a lion. Whoever heard of defending a lion? Just turn it loose and it will defend itself." – Charles Spurgeon

It was passed along to me by a dear friend, a professor by trade. Erik reminds me of him as they have similar dispositions.
