Finding & Losing Faith – Two Daves on SBE

Erik Guzman January 30th, 2009

Book CoversDave Schmelzer was "the campus atheist" in college. Today he not only believes in God, he's a pastor.

Dave Sanford came from a long line of atheists but became a "sold-out follower of Jesus Christ" by age 13. However, later in life, after "a rapid-fire series of crises," his faith faltered.

Join both Daves on this edition of SBE as we talk about finding faith, how to hold on to it and how to help people who have lost their grip.

Dave Schmelzer is the senior pastor at Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Boston and the author of Not the Religious Type: Confessions of a Turncoat Atheist. Find out more at NotReligious.org.

Dave Sanford is the author of If God Disappears: 9 Faith Wreckers & What to do About Them. Visit Dave online at his blog and at IfGodDisappears.com.

for what its worth…in reference to one of the speakers' sister being a Taoist…I am a huge fan of C.S.Lewis and believe he is about as close to a modern day prophet that there has been in recent history…anyway some years ago I was reading a book written by one of Lewis' students/disciples that was mainly about the death of the authors wife( I apologize, the title escapes me totally right now) but included many letters and correspondence between he and Lewis, and in one of those was a really fascinating comment by Lewis. This certain letter had to do with where/what should new believers do in approaching Bible reading, as in where to start, how to proceed, etc…Lewis strongly recommended Romans as the best starting point for explaining salvation…but…BUT…in a very blunt sincere manner he said that before reading Romans he would advise anyone to first read…The Tao!…well needless to say I have read the Tao (and the fun and light hearted take on it called the "Tao of Pooh") and found that it really isn't a work about spirituality as much as a way to simplify our thinking about life in general that does not exclude Christianity. So even though this has little or nothing to do with the theme of the show, and was only in regard to a passing comment, I hold Lewis in such high regard that I thought it worth a mention. I hope that it provokes some thought or discussion.

You all realize, of course, that by saying there is no Answer Man you supplied an answer.
Can anyone make an argument that we still need answer men an women at some point? See for example Jesus parable of the sower and seed.
I haven't read the books mentioned above, but I am going to, and that's a promise, great interviews…fodder for this weeks sermon too.
