The Coming Evangelical Collapse – Michael Spencer on SBE

Erik Guzman March 20th, 2009

Michael SpencerNow that Michael Spencer, aka The Internet Monk, is a semi-regular on SBE, his star is on the rise.* You've probably recently seen his article, The coming evangelical collapse, on one of your favorite sites or news outlets.

Join Michael and Steve on this week's show as they discuss the iMonk's prophecy that "…within two generations, evangelicalism will be a house deserted of half its occupants."

Michael Spencer has been blogging at InternetMonk.com for 8 years, ministering as a Baptist minister for 30 and preaching for 37. He's currently campus minister at a Christian school in Southeastern, Ky.

* If you believe that, check out the Technorati rank of InternetMonk.com vs. this site. That should give you an indication of who's promoting whom.

[...] My favorite interview is always with Steve Brown, Etc. Here's today's episode, with yours truly as the interviewee. [...]

Erik needs to get off that diet, it's making him cranky!

Bud March 21st, 2009

Erik! Get a grip! If you are going to let the comments of one observer silence you then you haven't been listening to Steve all these years. Your show is a perfect mix of personalities.
Steve provides the foundational biblical understanding and cynicism he is so well known for, Kathy provides the level headed female perspective that is so essential to any discussion (was that sexist? oh I am so not PC) and you provide the off-the-wall "lets question the orthodoxy" attitude that the church needs if we are to survive the "coming collapse".
You three rock! keep it up!

Erik March 22nd, 2009

Don't worry Bud. The only way I'd shut up is if Steve asked me to. I simply saw this as an opportunity to goof around.

Sure it hurts a little that I'm not universally loved and appreciated, but I'm grateful for folks like you that get what we're doing and enjoy it.

So, how much poundage are you down, Erik? Been keeping up the 6-workouts a week as well as vegany stuff?

Prester Scott March 23rd, 2009

I love both Steve and Michael so I knew I'd love this interview, but I have to say, my very favorite part was Steve's definition of a "mixed blessing" as "watching your mother-in-law go over a cliff in your new Cadillac."

Erik March 23rd, 2009

I'm down 22 pounds since Jan. 1. Yup, been doing the workouts and the vegan thing…not drinking or smoking in 2009 either. I'm eating raw and vegan for Lent, so I've got that going for me…which is nice.

I'm 53 and a Democrat, more liberal than conservative on most issues, although not all. I don't care for Rush Limbaugh's views on most things. But you know I feel at right at home listening to Steve Brown Etc. The only thing that I can figure out is that it must be Jesus. HE's always causing to do things I don't want to do and making me try my best to love people who have no use for me. HE tells me shut up and try listening for once. And I will tell you things that are wonderful to know. And those things might come through an Internet Monk, or Joel Osteen or perhaps the fatherly voice and caustic wit of Steve Brown. Who say HE doesn't have a sense of humor?

Jim Lee March 26th, 2009

Hey Steve/ Thanks so much for having the internet monk on here! He is so "right-on", and you have always had a lot more guts than you will give yourself credit for. The "coming evangelical collapse" is getting a lot of attention, and deservedly so. SBE has reached a new high point with this interview!
