Jesus Freak – Sara Miles on SBE

Erik Guzman February 19th, 2010

Sara Miles at The Food PantrySara Miles is a self-described "free-range Christian." She's a former atheist who experienced a radical conversion, so she didn't grow up in church bored by sermons. As a result, she really believes that "this thing is real." Her new book is Jesus Freak: Feeding, Healing, Raising the Dead.

(If you're on the front page of the site click "Read More" to see player options.)

Join Sara on Steve Brown Etc. as we set aside the arguments among Christians and talk about her work as a Jesus-loving activist who feeds thousands of hungry people a week. We also talk about how ordinary people (that's you) can take up God's extraordinary work.

Sara is a journalist who has written for The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Out, The Progressive and Salon. She's also the founder of St. Gregory's Food Pantry.

Also, don't miss Sara's last appearance on SBE when we talked about her book Take This Bread: A Radical Conversion.

Hi Eric and Steve,
I just heard your broadcast with Sara Miles and…I heard her too. I have to tell you that I was offended and disappointed and a little angry. But then again I know about my own sin and though that's not the one, there are others…many others. I suppose the thing that is puzzling to me is that I'm not proud of them and I pray that the Lord will change me and I try really hard to move with the current of His change in me. It's confusing to me because I want to love and encourage Sara on one hand but then it doesn't seem right to just give her a pass on her lifestyle of sin as she leads in ministry. Help me out with this. I know I have hang ups but I also know I have a responsibility as a Christian to stand for truth. I'm glad you had her on the show. I have some gay friends that I care for deeply. I pray for them and I want to see them in my church. Am I wrong for expecting that the Lord will worry about the details of their sin in his timing? Should I expect to see His healing in their lives and just accept them into leadership roles? I really am confused about this and just trying to be real. Keep up the great work all- I love you guys!

Hey Guys,
I went back and listened to your broadcast from 2007 with John Freeman from Harvest USA. That was a great show and helped me a bit with my confusion. I've concluded that what I heard in that interview was the truth because I've come away knowing that love and mercy are my responsibilities toward gay people which that even "feels" right emotionally as well as striking at the gong of truth the Holy Spirit has planted deep within. I think it's interesting to point out that this is the opposite sense that I get when I've listened to teachers rail against homosexual sin which often results in my feeling self righteous, angry and justified in being mean and talking ugly about gays. I appreciate the clarity presented which doesn't sugar coat sexual sin as anything but sin. My confusion about gays in leadership positions is a little more clear for me even though this wan't discussed directly. Steve, I've heard you say that the most repentent person in the congreagation should be the preacher. I get that and I think that to a degree the same should be said for all in church leadership whether they be staff or laypeople. With this in mind, it seems clear that the unrepentent of any stripe should not be in a leadership role in a general sense. With this said, I see nothing wrong with a gay person in an appropriate leadership role if he or she has confessed the sin and trusting Christ. By appropriate I guess I mean that I wouldn't put a party balloon in charge of the porcupine pen. I hope Sara grows closer and closer to Christ every day and He will change her if he chooses but if he doesn't he'll love her anyway and i should too.

Wonderful interview. Thanks a lot.

Maybe this says something about my sense of humor, but I thought "it" was pretty funny, especially in light of Steve's comments at the end of the show. I remembered y'all getting "letters" last time Sara Miles was on SBE, so I figure it's to be expected!

At any rate views on homosexuality aside, I really like Sara Miles. Both of her interviews on SBE were really good. I've been meaning to pick up Take this Bread for a while.

Hello Steve,

I'm with Dan on this one as well. I really enjoyed the interview (although I didn't really get a sense of what the whole book is about) and like Dan, was thrown off when Sara mentioned her wife. I'm thrilled that she's found Christ and considers herself a Jesus freak. I think her ministry is legitimate but I also know some ungodly people doing some great things too. I see the benefit of embracing these people like Sara and I believe that Jesus would do that too but there is this glaring issue. Please address this on your show. Do understand that I love your show and I'm tired of religion as well, but this one is a stumper for me.

Hi Jeff. Dan found our show, "Homosexuals and the Church" helpful at this point. You may as well. Here's a link…

Yes the wife thing threw me for a spin. Since I did not know about Sara Miles I thought I heard wrong but I guess not. Enjoyed interview and learning about the outreach she has.

Can I say LMAO here? Just checking. Ok…so that you guys know how your average (or below average) listener heard this…I was driving in my Jeep….and I heard what I thought must have been wrong…so I pushed my finger on my ipod and rewound it…because I was sure it was my error…then, after twice listening again, I realized it was not. Then I realized that it was maybe the funniest moment on SBE I have ever heard. Then I realized it was also challenging and I had to decide how to react…then I realized that I still had to accept that gay, kooky liberals, and yes even lesbain wives are my brothers, sisters, and wives of sisters of mine…and I am thankful for them…and repent for thinkng otherwise. Then I also realized…do you guys know that your show is the only media I hear this message on? And then I realized that when you know Jesus…the rubber hits the road…and sometime it goes THUD. And that is what happened to you guys. but my question is…..will you talk about it? And if not…why not? And I realize I could not do it…but don't you have to? How can you not? And I am not saying what you should say…that isn't the point…guys…TALK ABOUT IT!!!!!! You know that issuie avoidance is one of our greatest faults….I don't mean can homosexuals preach…who cares about that…guys, the average Joe doesn't give a rats behind about that…I mean…can you love them???? Can you love me???? That is the real question that is hanging…not all the other ones. can you answer that one when someone shoots the bunny like that (metaphor deliberate)?

ok…I got carried away…it was simply hilarious and handled with tremendous grace and humor at the same time….which is very cool:) Thanks
