Oh goodness, this show was so good that I had to Tweet two quotes before the first 6 minutes were up. Ok, so the quotes were about kegs and underwear, but all publicity is good publicity, right?

(Steve, if you don't know what tweeting is, I'm sure Erik will be glad to explain it)

Btw- so happy to hear that you're having Jeffrey Overstreet on soon! Not only is he one of my favorite fantasy authors, and I thoroughly enjoyed your previous interviews with him, but I was really hoping for this particular interview after seeing the Mars Hill video.

Ronnie McBrayer is so amazing. One of the really "special ones" ") I always introduce him as "love personified"

But, but, but… I *like* the institutional church!

Erik Guzman March 2nd, 2010

You're liturgical aren't you Obed?

Obed March 3rd, 2010

Yeah, I don't hold with these new-fangled ideas!

Actually, I've been in a lot of different church styles over the years and have come basically back to the Anglicanism of my childhood. The stuff going on with ACNA here in North America has been really neat to me.

That said, I totally dig what folks like Mr. McBrayer are saying. I found it funny, for example, when I read the ubiquitous Pagan Christianity that most of what it was addressing didn't really apply to us liturgical folks. I.e., Viola's problems weren't with the liturgical church and its alleged syncretism in the early days but was with the some of the trends in today's evangelical and "free-church" traditions. After going through that kind of thing for 15 years, my answer was to get back in touch with some of the more historically-connected forms of worship, but with the ethos and theology of evangelicalism. Hence, me digging ACNA.

Other folks, though, react by going back to the upper-room, house-church kind of thing. I find that appealing in some ways, but my spiritual temperament is such that I need the structure and liturgy to help me get going and to help me focus on God. Sometimes I don't know what to say, but the Prayer Book says what I'm wanting to express to Him. Other times, the Prayer Book primes my prayer pump, so to speak. Plus, the connection with 2000 years of Church history means a lot to me. I like being a part of that "communion of the saints" (to use some liturgical buzz-phrasing).

Erik Guzman March 3rd, 2010

That's what I was getting at. I'm over the "big box" protestant churches too. However, I am happily "institutionally" liturgical for many of the same reasons you brought up.
