Seriously, great, thoughtful show! Good comments at the end, Erik about the disconnect between systematic thinking and everyday life.

They did interview him last year. I remember. A little Shack discussion too.

I sure hope Brown goes after McLaren (in his friendly way) and there's a brown session or something on it. I like some of the emerging thought but McLaren, Pagitt, and crew are just liberals, sorry, but they are.

Thanks Derek. I'm looking forward to McLaren too. I was really looking forward to Brennan Manning, but he fell and injured his shoulder two days before our recording and had to cancel.

Yeah, we've had Driscoll on twice, and both times I really liked him. However, I don't think Avatar is any more demonic than a church full of self-righteous jerks. And all the manly man stuff is a bit much for me.

But, like I said, he's very likeable when you talk with him and I like reformed theology too. He claims to have heard God audibly tell him to start his church. Frankly, I'm jealous. The only voices I hear are the ones in my head.

I agree that Avatar isn't any more satanic than most hollywood movies (which I watch many of). I just thought it was boring and an hour and a half too long.

I hear ya Justin and I agree. I had never seen a movie in 3D Imax before. This one was made for that and I was like a kid in a candy store. No nutritional value in all that candy, but it was fun. My multiple viewings were about sharing that. I was never impressed with the story.

I don't get why people think Avatar is demonic/satanic at all.
Is it just because it's a commercial Hollywood Blockbuster???, therefore no good can come from it ?

When I watched it a few months ago, I was blown away with the artistry,imagination, creation, and even the storyline attached, since, it had a moral to it. The moral being:

'Our environment and the natural creation (of God), are vitally important beyond human acquisition for profit purposes. Sometimes it's in our better interest in the long run, to leave the forests alone & be better stewards of the earth.'

So, how is Avatar demonic again ???

I don't know Mr. Driscoll, but from what I hear coming out of him, I just think he listens to himself a little too much. This is the guy who thinks that if Jesus were here now he'd never miss an MMA cage fight?? And that doing this sort of brutal stuff to each other is some "God-like" because Jesus was a REAL man…ye~~ah….that explains much right there…so i am with you on that - too much manly stuff- Erik.
Anyway what I got from Avatar was a message of greed, as in the Powerful, technologically advanced government exploiting the "lesser" indigenous people for their resources at any cost, and this instance losing. Which is not exactly a new theme or message for Hollywood or literature to give us in recent history. I can only guess that Mr. Driscoll is anti all sci-fi and fantasy since the idea of strange races with strange beliefs and religions pretty much permeates that genre. That would have to include Lewis and Tolkien and many of the sci-fi/fantasy classics down through the ages.
Can you find demonic/unholy themes in just about any Hollywood movie (sci-fi or otherwise) ? Yes! Has any of them caused me to turn to satanism? No! Yet somehow i am supposed to see some holy message in grown men pummeling and brutalizing each other inside a cage? I think it is important that we not loose our perspective and our treatment of entertainment for what it is.
Well anyway you cut it, it was a great show as always and I really enjoyed Mr. Overstreet's insights…very wise man…and as always enjoyed the Old White Guy et al.

The Academy has always been political in their handing out of awards. By not giving the Best Picture to Avatar they are sending a message to the envirowacks along the lines of "You people are not important to us anymore". The anti-Bush politics are still strong at the Academy, hence Oscar to The Hurt Locker. Art ends with nominations at the Academy. The winner is always the most politically correct. Just because the politics have changed doesn't mean it hasn't always been this way.
