Will Jesus Buy Me a Double-Wide? - Karen Spears Zacharias on SBE

Erik Guzman March 19th, 2010

Will Jesus Buy Me a Double-Wide?From The Secret to prosperity gospel preachers, we're told that our thoughts and actions can attract good things to us. Muster up enough good vibrations or faith in God and you can be healthy, wealthy and wise. But when the formula doesn't work, where does that leave the faithful?

Join us as we talk about that with Karen Spears Zacharias, author of Will Jesus Buy Me a Double-Wide?: ('Cause I Need More Room for My Plasma TV). Karen writes,

"I know without question that God's love for me or his favor towards me is not manifested in whether I live at the end of a dirt road in a trailer or around the emerald bend in a gated community…God's love is not evident in our net worth at all."

If you're going through a tough time, listen to today's SBE for some hope in the dark.

Karen's work has appeared in the New York Times and Newsweek, on NPR and more. She's also the author of Where's Your Jesus Now and the nationally-acclaimed After the Flag Has Been Folded. Don't miss Karen's previous appearance on SBE.

I find even more disturbing is the thought that for those for whom this theol;ogy of prosperity seems to be working…thinki…that their prosperity is a sign of the right standing and acceptance by the Father. perhaps this falls into the catagory of believe a lie and be damned!

Steve, now your talking. This certainly beats that atheist fellow you had on last week. But, I got to tell you I've met all kinds of folks in my life, rich and poor alike. Some are OK and well, some are just down right nasty. It's that seeing Jesus thing that is hard for me. Well maybe Melville was right when he said, “Heaven have mercy on us all - Presbyterians and Pagans alike - for we are all somehow dreadfully cracked about the head, and sadly need mending” I guess for the Presbyterian part I'll replace Catholic, but one can fill in the blank suppose. Thanks for this one amici. AJ

I'm told that this has become a major problem in the global south due to american missionaries bringing the prosperity gospel to them. But fortunately, the real gospel seems to be alive among the very evangelical brand of anglicanism and some other orthodox groups that are flourishing in the Global South also. In fact, in Anglicanism, it seems that the Global South's zeal for the gospel is rekindling American congregations.

Paula White explained it all to me a couple of years ago.

I would prosper and enjoy all that God wanted me to have.

I would drive that Lexus that showed the world that those of us who loved The Lord received our due.

The Bible told me to follow the law of something called "First Fruits" As a former sinner, I thought that this had something
to do with drinking bo jo lay.

It was a new year and no lie, first fruits, a direct order from God, said that I should send Paula .her beloved husband Randy(oops) MY PAYCHECKS FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY. My barns would overflow with livestock and crops and stuff, and my vats would due whatever it was that vats do.

What is a vat?

Alas I have no fruits to send the first of them. I know that that is the reason that my life stinks today.

Helping Paula withthe first fruits rules and regulations was a guy named doctor Mike Murdoch. This man exudes Humility. All the money that he has (he says he has got it) and he wont squander money on a colorist. A hands on man.

Steve I have loved and have been well served by key life for quite some time. As a defrocked radio guy I LOVE Steve Brown Etc. Hearing this I now miss…miss and I mean miss being on the air.

Thank You and God Bless

Jim McGahan
