Remembering Michael Spencer – Chaplain Mike & Jeff Dunn on SBE

Erik Guzman April 30th, 2010

Michael SpencerMichael Spencer, aka The Internet Monk, was a uniquely honest, thoughtful and gifted communicator. We were fortunate to have him as a semi-regular on Steve Brown Etc. and one of our guest bloggers. Sadly, Michael died on April 5 after a four-month struggle with cancer. He was 53.

Join Chaplain Mike and Jeff Dunn from InternetMonk.com on SBE as we remember the iMonk and talk about his soon-to-be released book Mere Churchianity: Finding Your Way Back to Jesus-Shaped Spirituality.

Also, here's a link to Michael Spencer's last appearance on SBE, The Coming Evangelical Collapse. Michael, we'll miss your dispatches from the post-evangelical wilderness.

I have enjoyed reading Michael Spencer since 2006. The first thing I ever read from him was "Dancing At The Fundamentalist Ball" It was as if my life was being written about. This piece expressed my thoughts more than any other piece I had ever read. I was hooked on reading IMonk, listening to his pod casts, reading anything he wrote. Not because I agreed with everything but because I finally found someone not afraid to write the truth of how he felt about Christianity, about his journey. Finally, someone without platitudes. When someone died or was sick, he wrote the truth of how we feel. We cry, we hate they are gone. This is my feeling on Michael's death. I cried, I hate that he is gone.

The interview of Jeff Dunn and Chaplain Mike regarding Michael Spencer was one of the best interviews!!!!

Also, I loved the new version of "Happy Trails". Eric, you're nuts (LOL!!!) but in a good way. I love it! Steve, keep him around–don't let him go! I missed Kathy! Look forward to hearing her on the next program.

Great show guys. It's amazing–and unfortunate–that people like Michael Spencer seem to be the exception. He will be greatly missed.

(Also, Eric: me and some friends lip-synced the VH "Happy Trails" in Junior High at a talent show. We lost.)

I love Waterbrook- they really aren't afraid to buck tradition. They've put out some of the best Christian fantasy that I've read for that very reason. Glad to hear they're excited about Mere Churchianity, it's definitely one of the books on my TBR (to be read) list.
