Surprised by Grace – Tullian Tchividjian on SBE

Erik Guzman June 4th, 2010

Tullian "The Rebel" TchividjianJesus attracted drunks, whores and outcasts while offending the religious folks. Our churches are filled with religious folks and the irreligious won't come near them. Do you think maybe we Christians aren't spreading the same message Jesus did?

Join Tullian Tchividjian on Steve Brown Etc. as we talk about his new book, Surprised by Grace: God's Relentless Pursuit of Rebels.

(If you're on the front page of the site, click "Read More" to see audio player options.)

Tullian is Billy Graham's grandson and pastor of one of America's best-known churches, Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He's also a former drug using high school dropout who says Christianity is for losers. Don't miss this fun, freeing and thought-provoking edition of SBE!

The iTunes podcast of this episode is actually the audio for last week's episode.

What was the name of the parenting in light of the Gospel book that TT mentioned? Thx!

Tullian is too good looking to be saved by grace. We need more ugly people to help get the message of grace out there. Just kidding, of course. A fantastic interview and I am so thankful to hear this personally. I hear a lot of Tim Keller in his interview, The Prodigal God kind of thing, and also a lot of Law/gospel kind of thinking..ie White Horse Inn, Rod Rosenbladt etc…the Mockingbird Blog….Paul Zahl and his clan….not to mention you guys and Steve….have you had any of those people on as guests and wouldn't that be a great idea? Or at least something that talks about the law/gospel Lutheran thing? Thanks again.

"Jesus attracted drunks, whores and outcasts while offending the religious folks. Our churches are filled with religious folks and the irreligious won't come near them. Do you think maybe we Christians aren't spreading the same message Jesus did?"…that might be the most succinct and accurate analysis of where the "church" is today as anything I ever heard spoken by all the so called great minds of theology anytime anywhere…very powerful…very good show

Very good indeed! I cannot think of someone who would not think carefully about the grace factor even if itīs discussed under such amount of laughter and jokes. Besides, this was one of the most hillarious programs ever. The guy just fit in the program! He thinks grace the way you guys do! Very nice. And if the point was really filthy profit and selling the book out, you just did. Iīm buying one to read in Brazil (itīs a pitty itīs not in portugese yet).

I also didnīt get the name of the book his friend about coersion using the gospel to grow kids… by susan who?

Anyway, I gave up a few months ago on congragatin with my church (any church actually) because I couldnot stand anymore the boring and superficial "believerness". The only moment I think we would act as a real church was the "snack time", when people really laughed and got into personal conversations. Anything else I could see in youtube, if it was interesting enough (which is hard to say). The conversation about grace and the kind of freak people Jesus attracked may explain my counter-reaction about church. Too pale to be true.

God bless you, Tchivi@#!%#@, I hope in heaven you get an easier name written on your white little stone.. ))

Yourīs from Brazil.

PS: Steve, Cathy and Eric were superb on this one! I felt very much at home listening to the program! And Iīll try the Jonah-monster with my kids… :)

Loved the interview with Tullian Tchividjian! Just went to a conference in Phoenix called Truefaced – put on by Bill Thrall, John Lynch and Bruce McNichol, who I'm sure Steve knows. It was all about Grace – I thought Tully was preaching the exact same message! God is up to something subversive in the church today – almost like a second Reformation. It's exciting to watch and be a part of! You need to get the Truefaced guys on your show – you're peas in a pod!

How fun was that?!

What a great program you guys!

I'm an Old 3rd Grade Teacher so I can say this: '"you guys have learned to be really good listeners." So good to hear what Mr. T had to say.

Sending a gold star your way…

[...] a cursory scan to prepare for the Steve Brown Etc. interview with Tullian (you should definitely check out the podcast) but three hours later, I had read it in its entirety. Cover to cover. Have you ordered the book [...]

For TG The title of the parenting book is "Gospel-Powered Parenting: How the Gospel Shapes and Transforms Parenting" by Farley, published September 2009.

This is a great interview and VIT – very important topic – for all us rebels who think we are weird and out of sync.
