Jesus Deficit Disorder – Leonard Sweet & Frank Viola on SBE

Erik Guzman August 6th, 2010

Jesus ManifestoYou've probably heard the joke about the little boy digging through a giant pile of horse manure. An eternal optimist, he exclaimed, "With all this horse poop, there has to be a pony in here somewhere!"

It's kinda like that in the church. Where's Jesus? We're buried in guilt from not living up to the demands of moralism and social justice. All the while, Jesus is in this mess somewhere.

Leonard Sweet and Frank Viola are here to get us digging in the right direction. Join us as we discuss their book Jesus Manifesto: Restoring the Supremacy and Sovereignty of Jesus Christ.

Dr. Leonard Sweet is a futurist, writer and Chair of Evangelism at Drew University in New Jersey. His latest books include So Beautiful, 11: Indispensable Relationships You Can't Be Without and The Gospel According to Starbucks. Find out more at LeonardSweet.com.

Frank Viola is a speaker, organic church planter and author of Pagan Christianity?, Reimagining Church and From Eternity to Here.

I fully blame you for my mental images of Jesus tweeting. I can just imagine "Just healed blind man. Son of God FTW!", "Bread and fish for dinner, FTW!" and "Temptation FAIL http://de.vil/MaTt_4_11"

So, Mr. Sweet was talking about the Transfiguration in one bit. Did he choose that analogy on purpose as today is the Feast of the Transfiguration on the Liturgical calender for Western Christianity?

@Obed

This was recorded in early June and there wasn't any advance planning in that regard. Coincidence? I think not!

I saw Leonard Sweet in Ocean City at the Tabernacle in August, preaching this message. It was amazing – now I can't wait to read the book!! I've been a life long Methodist (even before we became the UNITED Methodists) and I've often wondered why God hasn't struck that church with lightning already!! But, people like Rev. Sweet give me hope for my denomination and hope for the church as a whole.
