'Good Shew' Erik#2. By shew I do mean program. Ed Sullivan, an old white guy from the past, had a TV variety show that included entertainment that bridged the gap between the older generation's instrumental and choral music to the newer generation's guitar-ish and individual personality music.

One of the more visibly uncomfortable introductions of old 'we have a really good shew for you tonite' was the introduction of the old 'Swivel-hips' or Elvis Presley (9/56). Ed seemed to have his arms folded more tightly than usual, but the young people in the audience just went nuts. That's shew business and ultimately history. I do believe that Elvis did die, and may be in heaven (just an inkling), and is not living a second career as a radio preacher.

I am sorry Erik that you did not get your cruise this week, but the program this week was first class. Especially all the focus on Scripture and Corinthians. Too bad you could not squeeze in Gen 1.

And you really do deserve a vacation from your 'senior producer' responsibilities which seems to border more on a 'herding cats' occupation. Might I suggest that instead of a cruise that maybe you follow Paul's recommendation that you separate from your wife for a time and stay at a monastery? Monk'ery may not be all that it is cracked up to be. Love you man!

There was a discussion in the shew about the audience of Paul's time, the world they were living in and how it affected them. The Roman Empire gets a bad rap sometimes, but they did bring 'law and order' to a very chaotic world, and eventually was used by God to spread Christianity throughout the known world.

The world today is very blessed by that activity, especially as shown in European influence. And it is interesting how 'terrorists' today (foreign and domestic) always seem to attack the significance of 'law and order', particularly as defined by God's 'Law and Order', or the Bible.

You might say that the Roman Empire brought 'law and order' through conquest, but like the spread of Christianity, conquest may be a necessary vehicle in order to achieve God's purposes in a rebellious world. Even the British Empire helped spread Christianity through the combination of missionaries and soldiers. Spain is a good example. Even American influence in the world has to have the support of military strength in order for missionaries to effectively accomplish their goals.

Of course we do have the evil men who somehow gain control in an empire and seemingly destroy any visible progress, but God's Will somehow and always maintains the advantage. From what I have read, Caesar Augustus, the first official Caesar, recognized the value of good moral character and tried to imbed this into his administration.

Where did he get such an idea? Was it from the influence of Jewish Law? Previous empires also seemed to be fascinated by a people and their God and His moral code. Of course evil men want to repackage God's Law, picking and choosing what works for them, and call it Progressivism.

Is the Church today called upon to fascinate people with their God and His moral code? Do politicians and judges (law and order) make decisions based on 'what works for them' and ultimately damage even those in the protection of the Church? Are rulings like 'no prayer in schools', 'abortion rights', 'evolution only in schools', etc, constructive or destructive to our culture? Are we going to take it anymore?

Well, good shew.

Warning, warning, someone should really check out Watson's Birth Certificate!

I know I may be violating Erik's theory of relativity here (and thanks to Erik) and I must confess that I do have a propensity to jump in and out of the box.

How about this: when I got married after many years of singleness, I had to scramble around to find my birth certificate. We all really should be asked to produce a valid birth certificate! And after 20 years of marriage, I have come to the conclusion that marriage is about keeping me closer to the box.

Anyway, many years ago when I first became a Christian, all the rage was about 'the Anti-Christ', credit cards having the mark of the beast (a number), and that a computer may be the 'final Anti-Christ'. Now after 35 years, I am still working with computers and instructing them (works both ways come to think of it), and I do appreciate having a credit card, and a wife, and a computer.

I did have a close call once when my payment was mailed late, but gracefully, the cc company pardoned me, and I still do not have a late fee to my credit or is it debit(?); 'blessed and grateful'. Thanks to my wife too.

Unfortunately, few of us recognized that credit cards are a major factor in inflation (they can charge us more) and irresponsible debt (don't have it, don't buy it). Another story.

The Jeopardy Program just wrapped up 3 days of Ken Jennings and Brad somebody, versus IBM's latest attempt at artificial intelligence. God's gift of a reasoning brain to mankind versus circuitry, a pretty good algorithm, and a still incomplete and very large data base. I do think that if they put a human restriction of button pushing on Watson, the results would have been different.

Ken J last night was impressive and did win the evening, and you could see he had a lot of answers, but the circuitry was just too formidable. The winner of course was Watson, IBM, and World Vision (1 million bucks – is that tax free?). Alex is big on World Vision, and so are we. Of course Alex's world view may be blurred with Progressivism.

A warning flag was posted to my brain near the end of the third program however. IBM was touting Watson as the solution to the world's problems. An unemotional and unbiased expert, who has all the data, and can tell us what to do next. Marketing, agh!

I do not belief that we can program a 'fear of God' into a computer, or factor in the 10 Commandments, and certainly not instill a 'fear of death'. When God imposed death on mankind in Gen 3, He had already pre-wired us to either fall to our knees in submission, or to build a tower with a computer in it to confuse the issues, and hopefully postpone or eliminate the inevitable.

This may not be so elementary Watson!
