The True Measure of a Man – Richard Simmons on SBE

Erik Guzman April 1st, 2011

What is the true measure of a man?Tyler Durden said it well in the movie Fight Club:

"You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You're not your !@#$&* khakis."

When life falls apart, khakis ain't gonna cut it. I don't know if today's guest would say it exactly like that, but he agrees with the sentiment.

So, if a man isn't what he does or who he knows, and he's not his khakis, what is the true measure of a man? Join us as we talk with Richard Simmons, the man who literally wrote the book on the subject, The True Measure of a Man: How Perceptions of Success, Achievement & Recognition Fail Men in Difficult Times.

Richard E. Simmons III is the founder of the Center for Executive Leadership, a non-profit, faith-based ministry. He's a retired CEO of an insurance firm and popular teacher, counselor and speaker to men's groups across the country. Connect with Richard at TheTrueMeasureofaMan.com.

True measure of a man: Christlikeness. Good relationships.

Problem: I'm so bad at being like Christ. Not good with relationships either.

Still about performance, isn't it? Extremely difficult to get away from?

While I'm all for Christlikeness, maybe Jacob is a good example, with the whole wrestling with God thing. Maybe we just need to wrestle with Jesus as opposed to trying to be like him. We'll always fail [at being like Him], but I can wrestle him. Maybe he'll bless me and change me.

. . . just some thoughts. Great show by the way.

Great interview! I think it is important for women to read this book, too. I have several women friends that measure their husband's worth by their ability to provide a comfortable life for them. My husband and I went through a period in the 90's where he lost his job, went back to school and we lived on my income as a teacher. It was a seven year period until he found another job. Couples in the church were not kind. I had one older lady comment to me, "oh, you young people are so much into that role reversal"! Jesus told me not to hit her so I didn't (but I did imagine it). Thanks for this interview.

Honestly, I came to this article because of the name "Richard Simmons." I couldn't help but wonder how you were going to reconcile Rock'n to the 80's and short-shorts with the measure of a man – unless you were going to say, "Here's the bottom of the scale, so be encouraged if you're more advanced." Sorry for the wrong name association.
