Is the Bible a Myth? – Dr. Tom Tribelhorn on SBE

Erik Guzman April 15th, 2011

Is the Bible a myth? It's been estimated that over 65% of Christian students abandon their faith by the time they get to college. In fact, statistics show that those actively involved in Sunday school are more likely to turn their backs on Christianity. What's the deal?

Join Dr. Tom Tribelhorn on this week's Steve Brown Etc. as we talk about his new book, My Professor Says the Bible is a Myth.

Dr. Tribelhorn has a Ph.D. in Judaic Studies and he almost lost his faith studying archaeology in Israel. This crisis of belief took him on a 10-year journey through history to find the truth. Today he's on a mission to communicate the evidence that the Bible is an historically accurate document and not an elaborate myth.

Go to MyProfessorSays.com to get the book, go deeper and join Dr. Tribelhorn as he reveals cutting-edge discoveries in archaeology that cut to the heart of the battle that's raging about the Bible's reliability.

Good show! I'm gonna have to get me a copy of this.

I hoped this program would have gone in-depth on the contents of this book. I hoped that I would be able to save $20 (I am mostly Scottish). But now I will be buying the book. Thanks for thowing me the 'anchor points' bone, anyhow.

In high school I flew planes and increased reception on my ham radio – instead of dating. I walked from table to table in the high school caffiteria with my chessboard looking for someone, anyone, to play. I once (not too long ago) watched a documentary…on the history channel…about the value of items from the original Star Trek TV show. But…I much prefer geeking-out this way. Thanks for the show.

My favorite class in seminary was with Dr. Cole and his Old Testament review from a narrative perspective. This approach was brought forward in the 1980's from a couple of secular-Jewish literature guys at Berkley who happened to really know their language and cultural history. If I had been sitting in that class at 22 instead of 33…well, I'm pretty sure I would have gone to Isreal for an extended educational stay under the program of some academic degree (knowing me, dropping out to bus tables at some restaurant there – to remain there). I hope this book gets in the hands of some young guy Christians who like history and ancient languages – and they move the truth forward..and wider in academic realms.

Haha Mark! I love it! I was hoping to hear a little more in-depth too but Steve, ya'll did a great job as usual and left me wanting more. I'm headed to the beach for a week and guess which book I'll be reading out there? Thanks for a great guest and a great show. Like Steve says, wherever you find truth…Jesus is there. Sometimes I think we Christians get so invested in being right that truth takes a back seat. Seeking the truth seems to often bring us back to the fact that we are totally dependent on Christ and that truth is so very much bigger than the space in our little spiritual back pack.

Now we are talking. Archeology and history are confirming the Truth of the Bible. But as a '6 day / 6015 year old universe convinced', I would have to add another field of study and that would be science. If two fields of endeavor are good then three would be just great.

But let us stick with two for now or maybe just in broad terms. I know just enough of all three to be dangerous, or should I say convinced.

I really did appreciate Dr. Tribelhorn's testimony of how a belief system can be so shattered by a very sophisticated 'unbelief system' that is constantly bombarding us with 'but we found this other piece of evidence' or 'you do not have any proof of what you believe'.

And to be intellectually honest, there really are two sets of data out there. One is based on the Bible and the other based on just empirical investigations.

If we look at the first chapter of Genesis we see God saying: I created a mature universe and virtually perfect with no flaws and 'ready to go'. An unbelieving world would say 'that is impossible' and we need to prove that first.

Sorry, the bottom line is 'we have to take God at His Word'. Anything else is undermining our own belief which is really what got the universe into trouble in the first place.

Yes it was Adam and Eve, and the rest of us who don't recognize the voice of the Devil. This is another essay in itself, but suffice to say, we need to understand the voice of the Holy Spirit more and more and more…

When I first heard and read about Jesus and Genesis 1, I asked God to show me if these thing are true. Boy did I get answers. Not always right away, or I fell asleep, or I took a break, but God kept showing me things about who He was, and what He did for me, and what is required of me.

And the answers came when I investigated archeology or history or science and used the Bible as well 'a Holy tie breaker'. Otherwise it is only argumentative speculation.

Should we place faith in Christ up to argumentative speculation?

As I look back on my life, I see that God was not necessarily 'giving me reasons to believe' but He was strengthening the 'faith that I already had professed'.

We do not have to turn back, unless we want to, and God is always there giving us opportunities to keep moving forward.

Maybe a 'spiritual crisis' is just God's way of getting us to keep moving forward to understand the faith that we already profess.

To repeat, a major breakthrough for me was working on James Ussher's Annals of the World which is really a detailed and documented historical analysis of world history.

This is a book I would highly recommend and if you want an updated and free CD Rom (outlines the Book) that accompanies the book (my part) just email me at 'pro6000@juno.com'.

Part of my requirement is to keep on keeping on.

Tom's book is excellent! He addresses the issues our kids are facing in their school. It is well written, entertaining and educational. I highly recommend this book!
