The Smell of Jesus – Tony & Peggy Campolo

Erik Guzman May 20th, 2011

Tony & Peggy CampoloWhen you're around Christians, do they smell like Jesus? No, I'm not talking about the scent of sawdust. I'm talking about the sweet fragrance of grace and compassion.

Join Tony and Peggy Campolo on Steve Brown Etc. as we talk about civil disobedience, gay marriage and civil disagreement in the name of love. (If you're not interested in those topics, join us anyway. With Jesus coming back tomorrow, it'll look really good for you if you're listening to a program about him.)

Tony is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Eastern University in Pennsylvania and he blogs regularly at RedLetterChristians.org. He's the author of over 35 books and a popular media commentator on religious, social and political issues. Tony has appeared on The Colbert Report, Nightline, Crossfire, Politically Incorrect, Larry King Live, and in our Guest Room.

Peggy is also a popular speaker and advocate for gay marriage and full equality for homosexuals.

Recently I posted my experiences of traveling up north and seeing and hearing about the floods, tornadoes, and the accompanying death and destruction. The first night we stayed in a hotel, of course, I turned the TV on and immediately found a replay of that not so great 60's movie 'On The Beach'.

You know the one about the search for intelligent life in California which turned out to be a coke bottle on a string bouncing off of a telegraph key (an ancient form of communication). Or course the movie ended in a secular annihilation of the world. I hope what happens in California, stays in California – a little political humor.

In the 70's when I was in the process of understanding the Bible, some of my friends requested that since they were going to be 'raptured' that I take the responsibility for their pets, homes, and financial holdings. Prudence should have told me to get it in writing. Just kidding – I really appreciate and love those people.

However, this am before this writing, while I was watering the front yard, a neighbor lady waved and did not ask me how I was doing, but asked 'how is your wife'? My wife is of the 'soft feminine side', so I have to be the 'messenger' or 'pack mule'; the man's or husband's lament. That is okay, we make a good team together – more political humor. Well, maybe not so humorous since our country is suffering from 'role definitions and responsibilities deficit disorder'.

Actually if the 'rapture' is true, then we should see a lot of dead bodies tomorrow, since the actual resurrection will not occur until sometime later. And if 'rolling earthquakes' are in order, then we will not be able to tell who is who. Those of us who are left,,, woosh. I believe etc airs at 6pm in some places?

As a 'young earth creationist', and this is just my opinion: I see a six day event where the big bang is the conclusion and not the beginning. This would be a time where Christians, those who are left (will be caught up, like Noah), because of persecution, would be longing for the end, instead of dreading it. Again, just me speaking; I have been wrong before and no one knows the day or the hour, or even the means.

Finally the program's comment about 'we are justified by grace'. Why do we always leave off the 'through faith' and forget verse 10?

Eph 2:8. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God– 9. not by works, so that no one can boast. 10. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

I personally believe that we should not let liberalism or humanism influence our thought processes (dangerous and squiggly light bulbs, polar bears over unborn life, and hamster cars are ridiculous concepts), and certainly not let them beat us into submission – if we do, then the end will have to come.

I have a friend (believe it or not) who is not an American, yet, and is struggling to understand the role of our country and Christian responsibility. I try to explain the Constitution and the roles of men like George Washington, Abe Lincoln, even FDR, and yes, even George W Bush, who prayed to God for guidance as they exercised their faith in the responsibilities given to them.

Hey, onward and upward in 2012. And be careful out there.

Don't lead Steve into Temptation ie,. Jim Wallis

lIKE YOU have said Steve, I really don't care what people do behind closed doors, but the PCUSA just voted to ordain gays…since when do we get a vote on what God calls sin.

Besides that, how in the world can we be proud of ourselves when we are still killing infants, why isn't that the subject of every political debate. We are so proud we aren't racists anymore or biases towards lbgt's…woop tee doo.
