Love Is an Orientation – Andrew Marin on SBE

Erik Guzman July 15th, 2011

Andrew MarinWhat's the deal with Christians and gays? What's it gonna take for us to get along? Do gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people need to change who they are? Do Christians need to change what they believe? Let's talk.

Join Andrew Marin on Steve Brown Etc. as we discuss his award-winning book, Love Is an Orientation: Elevating the Conversation with the Gay Community.

In three consecutive months, three of Andrew's best friends came out to him. As a Christian, he was forced to reconcile his friends to his faith. Today, Andrew and his wife live in Boystown, a predominantly GLBT neighborhood in Chicago, and his life work is to build bridges between Christian and gay communities. Don't miss this conversation!

Andrew blogs daily at LoveIsAnOrientation.com and he's the founder and president of The Marin Foundation.

I am generally with Andrew Marin, and I loved what he said about Jesus' answers to yes-or-no questions, and having a Bible study in a bar. However, I was confused on one point. Why is one never to use the word "homosexual"? It is certainly more precise than "gay", a word that had a completely different meaning before 1950. I don't think that it is any more value-laden than "heterosexual", or am I wrong? Help me out here.

Andrew Marin was interesting to listen to. I did appreciate his story about his three best friends admitting to him they were gay, and his wrestling with that, was compelling. His comment about Jesus answering questions with questions; a little weak to me though. Did not Jesus always elevate the understanding of those who asked questions of him, with truth? If anything, Jesus raised the bar when it came to the people's understanding of what sin truly was. And also, what righteousness really was. This is the disconnect we do see in the Church of Jesus Christ today. We either want to worship doctrine, and sacrifice works of righteousness and putting doctrine into practice, or, we want to be in our minds "doers of the word" and "smell like Jesus", without bringing the authority of Jesus doctrine, and how true repentance is a requirement, and not a pat on the back suggestion. Both extremes smell like something, and it ain't Jesus.

Daniel, in light of your comment, I want to amend mine. You are right that Jesus sought deeper truths than could be had with a simple "yes" or "no" answers. I think that Andrew was getting at something like that, but differently. Not to put words in his mouth, but if one offends his audience at the beginning of a conversation (someone will be ticked regardless of the answer to a "What do you think Romans 1 means?" question), then he's cut off any shot he might have had to communicate more deeply than "Adam and Steve" or "COEXIST" bumper stickers. Yes, I know; Jesus offended a lot of people. But maybe those were people he knew wouldn't want to be part of a real conversation anyway. He was quite gentle with others.

I'm sure it's not just me but I am at times conflicted regarding this entire issue. I'm a Christ follower. I'm hetrosexual and am content being the male I was created to be. I did have a brother who disappeared for ten years, as a gay male, then showed up one day as a woman whom we did not know. She stayed angry at the entire family until she died because we (could not) recognize her immediately as the same person as the 'brother' for whom we grieved. You try it! She told us that she'd had years of counseling.
My question! How, have we come to the point where the Biblical explanation (God's Viewpoint about homosexuality) is now somehow ameliorated, "now that we have entered this enlightened age?" Did God change his mind?
Her last words to me, "I wish I had never gotten the operations.
Monica; (nee Quentin), joined three denominations when she became ill; Roman Catholic, Methodist, and Episcopal. Her explanation, "I just wanted to cover all of the bases.

I understand much about this issue. When I worked as a manager of a local fast food resturant I hired many whom where homosexual (sorry – "gay" does not work). I bacame close friends with them. Even so they understood that I considered their unique positions to be sinful (just as those I worked with whom commmitted adultery or fornication were considered sinful). I did not judge them as individuals, but just as Jesus did not accept as OK the sin of the worman caught in adultery. Jesus told her to go and sin no more. I love the persons without accepting their sin as right. As Christians we must never compromise the Truth just to have conversation. We will lead many to spend an eternity in Hell away from God by compromise. We can be friends and love those living in sin, but we must never approve that sin.

What is the best way to speak with someone in your family who has decided she is gay? I am not sure what to say to her, and I know I want to help her in any way I can. PLEASE HELP. GOD BLESS.
