Luther, Jews & Nazis – Christopher Probst on SBE

Erik Guzman August 20th, 2012

"If we wish to wash our hands of the Jews' blasphemy and not share in their guilt, we have to part company with them. They must be driven from our country."

- Martin Luther (On the Jews and Their Lies)

For many, Martin Luther is the heroic reformer who launched Protestantism by nailing his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. In fact, the host of this program wouldn't be giving away free sins today if it wasn't for his hero, Luther.

However, what many don't know is that Martin Luther's speaking and teaching against the Jews aided the Nazis in justifying the Holocaust.

Join us as we talk with Christopher Probst about the good and evil found in Luther (and in all of our heroes).

Christopher Probst is the author of Demonizing the Jews: Luther and the Protestant Church in Nazi Germany. Dr. Probst is a professor at Saint Louis University where he teaches courses in modern European history, including Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. In 2008 he was a Charles H. Revson Foundation Fellow at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

One Response to “Luther, Jews & Nazis – Christopher Probst on SBE”

Bill Metzger September 4th, 2012

Hey, I'm a Lutheran pastor- and- as Luther- I trust Jesus and not in any man. Luther trully did give away free sins long before Steve Brown (whom I also admire deeply), buit Luther also made dumb statements and often did even dumber things. That's why Luther always ran-not walked, but ran to the Cross daily. Yes, his comments on the Jews are reprehensible, especially in today's world of hypersensitivity. But remember the times and remember that Luther felt he was a "foul smelling maggot sack" before God's perfect holiness. Luther needed Jesus. So do I- on my best day. And I don't have many best days! Simul justus et peccator, baby! Romans 5:20
