The Cross in the Closet – Timothy Kurek on SBE

Erik Guzman November 16th, 2012

What happens when a straight man who was raised in a strict, conservative Christian home in the Bible Belt decides to come out as gay to his family and friends?

He writes a book about his year-long charade that's endorsed by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and then gets asked to come onto Steve Brown Etc. to talk about it.

Good show Dan, thank you.
Will be good to hear from him again. It felt a bit incomplete. I did get good information from and also wanted to be honest.
Thank you again Sir.

K, bye

I heard an interview with him on XM's OutQ radio network. I found it fascinating though by the end I was heartbroken when he said that he has come to the conclusion that homosexuality is not a sin. What a great opportunity he had to lovingly speak the truth into the lives of those that are trapped in sin as a "lifestyle".

I've read Kurek's book, I'm glad he's getting attention and air time. Your presentation, however, leaves something to be desired. The borderline homophobic humor before the interview even began was off-putting and more than just a little tone deaf.

Look, I'm an old gay man, I walked away from my born-again faith decades ago out of self-preservation, because to continue in that kind of repression and outright hostility was to be suicidal.

From my vantage point, the worst crime evangelicals and fundamentalists commit isn't even their hatred of gays (and trust me, no matter how much they want to call it "love" – it ain't) is this: they are so committed to being "right" that they are willing to sacrifice any and or all human relationships that contradict them. IMHO this is why there are a gazillion different denominations, why Christians hate other brands of Christian, why Christians are behave so nastily toward LGBT persons…

…and yes, when my entire social network (because for my entire youth and a good part of my young adulthood that was church) dropped me like a hot potato because of what THEY thought was "right" there in the Bible – it did leave me somewhat bitter. And then to sound shocked that gay people are human too? After working so hard not to hear any of our stories or acknowledge the validity of our journeys? When you can write us off as "wrong" you do realize that you write off our humanity too, don't you?

C'mon Mr. Brown, you can do a lot better than that. No more patronizing "I'm a lot worse than them" statements, please. Equating my orientation to your personal flaws does not build solidarity with me – it's condescending. It's patronizing. It pushes away, doesn't build the bridge. Think about THAT.

Wow this was an awesome show! One of my favorite parts was at 23:00-25:00 when Steve talks in a way that says hey we are all sinners…That to me is what Christians need to know..Jesus came to tell us that and we keep trying to take the cross away from him…The only thing I was curious about was Steve asking if Timothy was still a Christian I am one to hope that Jesus holds onto you even if you let go…I like to call myself a Christian sinner it strikes up some great looks from people…More and more I am realizing a Christian isn't someone who lives the perfect life but one that admits they can't… that was Gods gift to us through Jesus it really is finished.
Thank God :)
