I'm Conservative…Really!

Steve Brown June 25th, 2007

A friend of mine who is an academic wrote to me the other day, saying that she had been listening to our talk show and it was obvious that I had far more liberals on the air than I did conservatives.

Said that she suspected I was a "closet liberal."

You would be surprised at how often someone will say something like that to me. Jay Bakker told me the same thing after reading A Scandalous Freedom. Despite my denials, he insisted that I was a liberal and wouldn't even listen to my efforts to disabuse him of his inaccurate definition of me.

So let me set the record straight. I'm a conservative theologically, socially and politically. Do you know how I know?

I know because I don't care at all about hungry, sick or homeless people.

I know because I'm homophobic.

I know because I want to make the rich richer and the poor poorer.

I know because I'm xenophobic and irritated with Hispanics and African Americans.

I know because when the homeless ask me for money, I won't give it to them unless they speak in English…and not even then if they have an accent.

I know because I'm working for the establishment of an American theocracy with Pat Robertson as president.

I know because I think that anybody who believes in global warming is a communist.

I know because I like war…It helps the economy and gets minorities off our streets.

I know because…

I had better stop because I could fill pages and the more I write, the angrier I get.

If you're gay, do you like people thinking of you as effeminate and weak? If you're African American, how about someone telling you that you like to dance, play the trumpet and eat watermelon? If you're a Democrat, how do you feel when people think of you as insufferably arrogant, self-righteous and shallow? If you're Hispanic, how do you feel when you're characterized as uneducated? If you're a feminist, how do you like people thinking of you as an Amazon-bra burner? If you're poor, does it bother you when people say you're lazy? And if you're a liberal, how do you like it when people say that you think in clichés?

Okay. None of those stereotypes are true anymore than the ones so often used for conservatives in general and for me in particular.

So… let's talk.

Don't do that to me and I won't do that to you. Could be that we are just folks talking about some problems. Could be that we just have different solutions. Could be that you're just as confused and worried as I am. Could be that talking would show both of us that maybe neither of us need a transplant, to wit, liberals don't need a transplanted brain and conservatives don't need a transplanted heart.

Yeah, I'm conservative–really, really, conservative. I'm conservative politically, socially and theologically.

Just don't be so sure that you have me in a box.

Okay?

There I've said it.

I feel better.

This is the reason I like Steve.

From one old white guy to another, you were born to blog.

dorsey June 25th, 2007

Middle-aged white guy here, but I aspire to oldness. You'll be pleased to know that you're not the only conservative who doesn't like it inside the box. Truthfully, I like to sit on the top of the box and and sing reggae songs through airholes in the lid.

Yes, I said air holes.

señor jefe June 27th, 2007

I'm a democrat. And I'm insufferably arrogant, self-righteous and shallow.

What's wrong with that?!?

dorsey June 27th, 2007

I can vouch for the previous comment. He's a jerk.

I love ya, Steve! I'm so glad to have found you again (you weren't lost, I was–in the beautiful but sometimes lonely cornfields of nw ohio…) & love your offensiveness & irreverent, politically incorrect conservativism. I'm not sure I'm as conservative a conservative as you (ha! no closet for this liberal conservative! But DON'T call me a moderate–sphew–spit it out right now!! There are those who would put me on the shelf w/ Falwell & Robertson, so, whatever.) I am still registered republican–for now, anyway. And our little 'bignamedenominationthatshallgounamed' congregation is looking at leaving said un-named denomination that won't call sin sin–they think we hate gays/lesbians/bi&transexuals/ETC. & some of us do probably, unfortunately, but most of us really don't, we're just trying to figure this all out the best we can with the Best Book we've got. And hopefully a little of Jesus' love.
You & your 'etc.friends' are a breath of fresh air to this sometimes suffocating pw. My hubbie & I struggle w/ our mutual addiction to the approval of others & now we know where we can get help & encouragement to embrace our inner offensiveness & let 'er rip a little more.
I'm glad to know I can listen to you here on the web (haven't heard you lately on the midwest radio stations I tune into occasionally (can only take it in bits these days…I have anger issues…) & am looking forward to a happily self-righteous future together!
Shalom!

Steve,
Really into what you teach. It's direct and to the point. You remind me of Dr.Gene Scott-never have a problem speaking your mind and the truth.
Your the Definite Article.

All You Calvinists,

That's really funny because I think Steve is SUPER conservative. My assessment is that he is SO conservative that he is surprised when his one long arm out there in Middleland gets a cool breeze coming from the spiritual Liberaland (and when he dares to speak about what it feels like, everyone freaks.)

kantian July 4th, 2007

All fun aside, and this was very funny, what does conservative mean for you, Steve? I can't identify myself with any label and probably never will. Politics is way too complicated and as you say "above my pay level." I take my identity from my relationship with Jesus. To me being political is having practical judgment, that is knowing the right thing to say or do at the right time and for the right reason. It is not having the right position. And identifying myself with any of the positions out there would mean I would be vulnerable to exactly what you are making fun of above: being confused with someone else's position and being exposed to other people's prejudices. You know as I have told you before I don't believe in thinking about things that are not within my control to change. My taking a position would not change anything anyway. What I can change are people's lives when I teach them and that means knowing the right thing to say at the right time and for the right reason. Did I mention how funny your blog was? (-: kindest regards.

If you believe that you're theologically conservative, then you must have a pretty strange view of theological conservatism.

You're certainly no Bible believer and so many of the things you say are inconsistent with someone who's been born again, that I really fear for your eternal destiny.

Dave-Former Steve Brown Student November 7th, 2007

I am a former student of Steve's and I love his message of the true and radical grace of Christ. You see I have secretly hated myself for most of my life and thought God hated me too. But for some crazy reason Steve's message of the grace of Christ penetrated the chains of my self hatred and from some freaking crazy reason I now know Jesus really loves me!

I dont care what you call Steve, liberal or conservative. But if the message of the amazing grace of Christ that Steve preaches is liberal…then bring it on…liberate me!

Thank you Steve. You probably dont remember me…but I thank Christ I know you and had you as a prof at RTS. I left RTS 10 years ago and didnt finish my MDiv….now I am back in Seminary at Candler School of Theology at Emory University and finally finishing my MDiv. Thanks to Steve's message of grace (that needs to be preached for a world in such desperate need) I am back in ministry and recovering from my secret self-hatred.

Grace and Peace!

PS…Who ever MikeMcK is that wrote on Oct 30th…are you serious? I hope your comments were a joke. Take the shackles off Mike and join that dance of grace with Jesus!

MikeMcK November 7th, 2007

Yeah, I regret saying that. It was unfair of me to say that. To be honest, I said it more out of frustration at attacks by his followers than anything to do with him.

My apologies to Steve.

However, I do stand by my statement that he's no conservative.

I don't have any shackles on. I have experienced God's grace.

But thank you for your condescending tone, anyway.

Jason November 14th, 2007

I'm not sure if Steve is conservative or liberal…the jury is still out. I love him though because he makes me think, which I like to do on occassion.

I can see both sides, honestly. If I had to venture a guess, I would say Steve is conservative…maybe even very conservative.

The thing is, he's a man who directs his message to his audience, which is mostly conservative, at least when he's speaking at churches. I believe he tries (and succeeds at) helping conservative Calvinistic evangelicals understand God's love…this is good because we already understand God's soveriegnty, His righteousness, and His power.

I believe if he spent his time rubbing shoulders with true liberals, he'd have a different message altogether…or at least a different focus for that message.

But as I said, I'm just not sure…time will tell.

Daniel November 14th, 2007

SB is sooo conservitave he is liberal….think about that…

Daniel November 14th, 2007

Sounds about right…or left..? =P

Brian January 26th, 2008

The Irony in all of this is that Steve does not care either way….I praise God for that!! Jesus would forge another party altogether anyway! I don't care about taking sides politically ….Christians need to stop hiding behind a party, start making their own biblical waves, otherwise you will never make a difference! There's plenty needing change right here, let's clean up our own back dump before we look to "Govt" to stake our claim. Washington is Godless now, mammon sucking the power and control right out from under the Church. TIme to wake up and put some of that "grace" to work!! Right Steve??

Jim Zucker February 12th, 2008

Washington has always been Godless. Our government, any government, and every government consists of depraved individuals. Only Christ through the Spirit changes lives, and he acts regardless of the state of the economy, even regardless of the colors at the top of the flag pole.
