He didn't know what he was missing until his late twenties when he moved in with a family and got an extended look at a father in action.

That set Miller on the path through the experience of loss to healing. He writes about it with candid self-revelation and humor in his new book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1439169160?ie=UTF8&tag=stebroetc-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1439169160"target="_blank">Father Fiction: Chapters for a Fatherless Generation.

With Father's Day coming up, we thought it would be good to talk to Don about his story and the work he's doing through <a href="http://www.thementoringproject.org/"target="_blank">The Mentoring Project, an organization that helps churches start mentoring programs and pairs mentors with boys in need.

Join Donald Miller and the Steve Brown Etc. crew for a look at the importance of fathers. Think of it as our Father's Day gift to you.

Now you can hear the entire 40 minute interview for the first time.

This edition of The Brown Sessions is loaded with conversation that we simply didn't have time to include on the radio show. Thank God for the Internet! Use one of the options below to listen.

Also, The Internet Monk will be a regular contributor to The Guest Room blog this year. <a href="http://stevebrownetc.com/2008/02/blogs/the-guest-room/attention-people-who-read-the-sbe-guest-room-blog/"target="_blank">Click here to read his first post.

Michael has been blogging since 2000 and he's been featured in Time Magazine for his writing on Joel Osteen. He has a master's degree in Theology, is currently a campus minister living in a Christian community in southeastern Kentucky, and has been a teacher in churches and schools for more than 30 years. Enjoy the discussion.

rev-o-lu-tion \rev-e-lü""shen\ n–repudiating tepid systems and practices of the Christian faith and introducing a wholesale shift in how faith is understood, integrated and influencing the world

According to years' worth of data collected by George Barna, the church is in the midst of the biggest Revolution of our time. Droves of committed believers are foregoing Sunday mornings to live a 24/7 faith unfettered by the clutter and bureaucracy within the church walls.

In stark contrast to both the stuffy, formulaic religiosity sometimes found in the established church and the feel-good, invent-your-own spirituality, the Revolution is casting off anything that hinders a full, vibrant life of discipleship to Christ.

Join Steve and George Barna on this week's edition of The Brown Sessions and get the skinny on the Revolution.

That sounds pretty cool until you hear about the taunting he received at school for being the "bastard child of Ronald Reagan." Then there was the trauma and disorientation of his adoptive parents' divorce. Add to that being a victim of molestation and child pornography at the hands of a camp counselor, and it all kinda takes the shine off the fame and influence thing.

Here's something he said on this edition of The Brown Sessions…

"What [posturing] leads to is this dual life. Who I am before you, I know I am not behind your back. And so the discrepancy, that sense of contradiction, I think is an acid that eventually literally tears away at the very fabric of faith for most leaders."

And get this…

"I think if you were to peer into many leader's hearts, they remember believing. They remember the first love. But in one sense, the posturing has so eroded something of their own capacity to be real and to be alive…that they've become somewhat robotic and certainly distant. And that kind of leadership never is a person that you would want to deeply follow."

Dan Allender is the President of Mars Hill Graduate School and Professor of Counseling. He's the author of a bunch of books, among them, The Wounded Heart: Hope for Adult Victims of Childhood Sexual Abuse. He's also a former drug dealer and deeply flawed individual. Now you know why I like him so much.

Join Steve as he talks with Allender about his book, Leading with a Limp: Turning Your Struggles into Strengths.
From the book…

"This is the beginning of a beautiful love story, Nancy wrote in her diary after meeting Don Heche, the man she was to marry. Five children and 25 years of marriage later, it seemed as if they were the perfect family. Then Don was diagnosed with AIDS-the shocking discovery of his homosexual secret.

This was only the beginning of loss and heartache. Shortly after Don's death, their 18-year-old son, Nathan, died in a car crash and Nancy fell into years of personal darkness. Eventually, as she was drawn into a long journey of growth and healing, her youngest daughter, Anne, began a very public lesbian love affair.

Despite Nancy's life circumstances, she held on to what she knew of God's promises from Scripture and is discovering how to look at people and the world with God's perspective through eyes full of love and blessing. Her inspiring story of faith and courage will offer hope to anyone who has ever been on the brink of despair, or wondered how to respond with love to someone in a same-sex relationship."

Johnny Cash is Steve Brown's favorite artist, so it was a real treat for him to spend some time talking with Steve Turner, the author of The Man Called CASH: The Life, Love and Faith of an American Legend.

As Cash's authorized biographer, Turner had access to previously unpublished letters, private photographs, as well as friends, family and colleagues in Cash's life, and the book includes behind-the-scenes insights into the death of Cash's wife June.

Check out this edition of The Brown Sessions to hear the consummate fan of Johnny Cash interview the expert's expert on the "Man in Black."

After you listen, watch the video for Hurt (posted below) that was referenced in the show. It's even more intense after getting an insider's look at Cash's life, pain, and faith.

Steve Turner began his journalistic career as Features Editor of the rock monthly Beat Instrumental where he interviewed many of the key figures of early 1970s rock. He then became a freelance journalist, and wrote his first book Conversations with Eric Clapton. In 1998, Bono invited him to write the book for the U2 film Rattle and Hum. He has also written biographies of Cliff Richard, Van Morrison and Marvin Gaye.

Think about family vacations. Visions of relaxation and intimate time with loved ones quickly give way to an exhausting schedule packed with activities, not to mention the friction caused by close proximity to the strangers with whom you live.

The spiritual disciplines are that way. Contemplating oneness with the God of the universe sounds great, but get still and alone with Him long enough and it starts to feel like that family vacation. Add to that the complexities of living in the suburbs, and it's enough to drive a man to drink.

That's why this week's interview is relevant. Join Steve Brown as he talks with Dave Goetz, the author of Death by Suburb: How to Keep the Suburbs from Killing Your Soul. Dave combines his knowledge of life at the edge of the sprawl and his experience with the spiritual disciplines to give even the most hardened suburbanite the hope of achieving a deeper life.

If life and religion in the suburbs have you on the verge of burnout, drop what you're doing and listen to this edition of The Brown Sessions.

I got up this morning and started to replace the Shane Claiborne interview with this week's edition of The Brown Sessions. I didn't get far before I came across a comment and this post from Mike informing us that Shane's neighborhood in Kensington was consumed by a massive fire yesterday. Thanks for the heads up, Mike.

According to thesimpleway.org, "…a 7-alarm fire consumed an abandoned warehouse in our Kensington neighborhood in Philadelphia. The Simple Way Community Center at 3200 Potter Street was destroyed as well as at least eight of our neighbors' homes. Over 100 people were evacuated from their homes, and 400 families are currently without power. Despite this tragedy, we are incredibly thankful to share that all of our community members and every one of our neighbors is safely out of harm's way."

This of course gives me a great excuse to leave the Shane Claiborne interview up for another week. Beyond the fact that I'll jump at any opportunity to do less work and still stay relevant, The Simple Way community needs your help.

Go to thesimpleway.org to find out how you can help. They have established an emergency relief fund, not just for The Simple Way, but for those in the neighborhood who lost their homes. Keep going back for updates, they'll be needing relief supplies soon as well.

Now, if you're thinking, Shane who? The Simple what? then listen to this interview and get Shane's book, The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical. After you fall in love with him and his work, get involved in their rebuilding effort. As Steve says in this interview, "Shane is the real deal." Alright…enough.
