Show DescriptionEtcetera

Thanks For The Buffoonery…

Matthew September 10th, 2007

Is this the way it ends?Three plus years, two show time changes, and (approximately) 140 episodes have led to this… the end of Etcetera.

Long story short, I have recently taken a new 45-hour/week writing and directing gig. That puts me out of play for our normal show time. Additionally, schedules– and life in general– just don't allow any of us to go back to a nighttime show.

We've had a few extended hiatuses, but to save you the pain of hope, as it stands now, this isn't a hiatus.

We plan to have one last official show, time and date TBD. Erik and Sharon will stream live tomorrow at the normal time (4ET) to talk about that, grieve, and discuss the possibility of a spin-off podcast of some kind. We're also talking about what to do with the considerable archive of past shows. On the plus side, we'll continue to have this page where we can post and discuss things. We've made incredible friendships all over the world through Etcetera and we have no intention of letting those end.

And, even though "˜Etcetera' as we know it may be passing, the three of us will certainly find a way to join forces again sometime down the line. We've been doing different radio shows as a trio since 1999, so some way, somehow, the buffoonery shall rise again.

Okay, getting a little sad now, so I'll wrap up. To completely and inappropriately borrow from Winston Churchill, "…this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

As always, thanks for listening. And we'll see you on the radio.

Congratulations on the Job Matt. I hope that either more archives can be put up since I have only been listening for a year and a half and there are still shows for me to listen too. Also, hopefully a new spin off can be done becasue I dont think Major Nelson's Xbox podcast is going to fill my void for buffoonery. Your going to get me in trouble with my friends though… I introduced someone to the show about a month ago and someone just on the weekend…. :)

There are no words for the grief that I feel. I thought the buffoonery would never die, yet lo, here it rests at the bottom of this pit of dispair, never again to meander though the hearts of pingers world-wide. All I have left, is the 140 hours of etcetera saved on my external hard drive. N'er more crule world, never to speak of Goulet's or bidets, of billeting or pingers, of Radio Head or Coldplay or Erik's pain. It is a twisted fate that that which you most cling to and adore is most thoroughly thrust from your hands. Alas, we shall always have Burbank! And to seal my heart and heal this wound, I shall bravely execute on last Haiku…

My Etcetera,
Though I shall miss thee always,
The [Ping] shall live on!

It's validation,
Sounding through the halls of time,
It can never die!

Vivre la ping!

Bummer. I listened to one of your etceterans shows for the first time when you were experimenting with the floppy doll "Haulwb" sound, and thought it was great. Will just have to listen backwards, now. You know, in reverse order to the podcasts, as opposed to anything else that may have come to mind. :)

Man, I am just bummed by this. I was driving into work today thinking that my schedule has been such that I cannot call in at 3 on Tuesday afternoons and I miss that. It was so refreshing to be able to talk to people that were like me but challenged me. I really hope that we don't lose touch. That would be the worst part of this ending.

One love, peace out.

Huh, maybe I should start calling into that other pod cast. What's it called? Steve Br…Brown! That's it! Steve Brown Etcetera! I'm scared of call screeners though. :'(

Gordo September 11th, 2007

DANG!?

I know I have not been around much lately but you are not far from my thoughts as I drop in to read the posts when I can.

MATT, SHARON, and ERIK Thank you for all the laughs and the "off air" contact we have had.

You have all touched me (at least Erik did) in ways that would be inappropriate to list here.

Cheers
Gordo

Wow.

I hadn't been monickered since sixth grade. And now it seems that all sense of identity has been robbed of me. Yes, Erik, this is all about me this time. Now, all my existential crises, all my self-loathing doubts will be turned inward since I can no longer say, "Gee. At least I'm not as big a shame-hole as Erik."

And as for Matt - the concrete that provides a funny but firm foundation - you were a dose of sanity in an otherwise chaotic stream. One might say you were Huey Lewis's elusive perfect drug: a cross between prozac and nitrous oxide.

And Sharon: ring tones won't be enough. Sure, my wife and I can say "Wookie Army Baby" whenever we want to confound and impress our friends, but that's just the veneer. You were the perfect "yung" (it's a new word) to Matt's Yang and Erik's Yin.

Alas. Etcetera. We have seen Tim and Nino pass already - but this, it's like the end of Abbey Road (or at least "Music from the Edge of Heaven" as Andrew Ridgley and George Michael parted ways).

Goulet to you.

"Geoduck" Joe.

Sharon, Matt & Erik,

I'm in shock right now. I've only been listening to you guys for a month or so on a referal, if you want to call it that from Greg From Canada. I was actually just checking in for the new show for this week. You guys were and are some good medicine for me. Had a lot of great laughs listening to the three of you with all your antics. You have an amazing chemistry together and it would be great to hear you back doing something down the road. See what you can do to make the archives available online please!!

All the best and God bless the hell out of ya!!

Dicksons Steve (from Canada).

Erik September 12th, 2007

As you can imagine, Sharon and I are totally bummed about the end of Etcetera. The worst part is that we won't be hanging out with Matt every Tuesday afternoon. But like he said, I'm sure we'll get a chance to do some kind of show together in the future…there's just too much history and it's too much fun to not keep that hope alive.

But as I've considered all this, I've come to the conclusion that I want to keep podcasting. Etcetera is dead, but I've got all this gear and I'm an insecure exhibitionist at heart…I have to do something.

Sharon wants to do something too, but we don't know what.

So, we sat down yesterday to talk about all this, turned on the mics, and streamed it. I'll be posting the recording today. Check it out. We'd be interested in your thoughts about possible futures.

Also, there will be one final episode of Etcetera. We plan on doing it on an evening or weekend and posting the date well in advance so anyone that's interested can be a part of it. It would be really cool to get everyone that we can on the phones and in the studio to experience the buffoonery one more time.

shelly September 12th, 2007

:(

Rest in Peace, Etcetera.

Zeke September 13th, 2007

Etcetera may die, but Buffoonery?

Buffoonery lives forever.

And like a butterfly from the chrysalis, something stupid and lovely will surely morph from the Etcetera caterpillar.

Love you guys!

Stupid Chicken September 14th, 2007

A [ping] Haiku:

Etcetera's gone
Buffoonery on hold
Until the next time

Patiently waiting [ping]'s second coming!

Grampa Dan October 11th, 2007

No humor, no buffoonery ? (make me think of "Are there no prisons, are there no work houses?" - from A Christmas Carol)

This is really disappointing.

Sigh, I guess we all have to grow up now.

No laughing matter, from Canada

Grampa Dan
