Through a Screen Darkly

Join us as we talk with author and film reviewer Jeffrey Overstreet about his new book Through a Screen Darkly: Looking Closer at Beauty, Truth and Evil in the Movies.

Overstreet hopes to, "help moviegoers develop the ability to explore the stories of popular culture, highlighting what is excellent and identifying what is flawed or indulgent, in order to participate in the cultural dialogue about art and the reality it reflects."

In the book, Overstreet writes about how filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Wim Wenders, and Krzysztof Kieslowski capture reflections of God in their work, whether they know it or not. On today's show, since we don't know much about those guys, maybe we can get him to talk about Star Wars.

Jeffrey Overstreet has a decade of experience as a film reviewer and columnist for his popular website lookingcloser.org. He is a weekly columnist and critic at Christianity Today's movie website, and his perspectives are regularly published in Risen and Seattle Pacific University's Response magazine.

Stimulating show–thanks! I wonder what you all thought of the film "The Sixth Sense." I ask because as I listen to your guest Jeffrey Overstreet, assenting "yeah, yeah, preach it, man" I find myself coming up with the one movie that I really abominate, even as I admire the brilliance of the direction: Are there just movies that are deep fat fried to some of us but not to others? Or is there something in my aversion to this, the sense of uncleanness surrounding the idea of the walking dead? What do you think?
