Death by Suburb - Dave Goetz
Erik June 28th, 2007
Many times the idea of a thing is very different from the thing itself. Think about family vacations. Visions of relaxation and intimate time with loved ones quickly give way to an exhausting schedule packed with activities, not to mention the friction caused by close proximity to the strangers with whom you live.
The spiritual disciplines are that way. Contemplating oneness with the God of the universe sounds great, but get still and alone with Him long enough and it starts to feel like that family vacation. Add to that the complexities of living in the suburbs, and it's enough to drive a man to drink.
That's why this week's interview is relevant. Join Steve Brown as he talks with Dave Goetz, the author of Death by Suburb: How to Keep the Suburbs from Killing Your Soul. Dave combines his knowledge of life at the edge of the sprawl and his experience with the spiritual disciplines to give even the most hardened suburbanite the hope of achieving a deeper life.
If life and religion in the suburbs have you on the verge of burnout, drop what you're doing and listen to this edition of The Brown Sessions.
