A Very SBE Christmas

Erik December 21st, 2007

Steve Brown is a notorious Scrooge. So, on this weekend before Christmas edition of Steve Brown Etc., we had an intervention.

Cathy and I, along with Tony Campolo, cornered Steve in the studio and did all we could to baptize The Old White Guy with the Christmas spirit.

Then, when our attempts failed, we brought in the big guns. Don't miss my 7-year-old daughter Hannah's national radio debut in the last segment of the program.

Christmas Spirit

Steve Brown December 20th, 2007

I’m a Scrooge at Christmas…but this year I think I have the Christmas spirit. Or, at any rate, it felt like it.

Last week I was channel surfing and came across Monk. I don’t often watch that program because I’m more neurotic than Monk is and watching him makes me feel uncomfortable. But I paused because Monk had a gun pointing right at Santa Claus. Then…

…Monk shot Santa Claus!

Cool!

That’s when I got the Christmas spirit.

(Well, maybe it wasn’t that, but I did feel all “w … (Read More)

[ping]ing in the New Year

Erik December 19th, 2007

I submit for your approval, the last [ping] podcast of '07. What a year! Mother Internet has been good to us.

We merged the old [ping] blog with SteveBrownEtc.com. We witnessed the death and birth of a podcast. The Mini-Me World Tour reached new levels of creative buffoonery. We raised a bunch of money for the disabled in Central Florida. We stayed in touch with old friends and made some new ones. And dang it all to heck, we had fun. I just wish my brother Matt was here.

On many lev … (Read More)

The Golden Compass Etc.

Erik December 14th, 2007

On this week's SBE, author and film reviewer Jeffrey Overstreet joined us to discuss the controversy surrounding The Golden Compass in the context of his most excellent Christianity Today piece, Fear Not the Compass.

Then, Rick McKinley stopped by to talk about an international movement "restoring the scandal of Christmas by worshiping Jesus through compassion, not consumption." It's called Advent Conspiracy and Rick tells us all about it and how it got started.

We even foun … (Read More)

The Believer Receiver

Erik December 11th, 2007

Attention holiday shoppers, Wal-Mart has sold out of the Talking Jesus Messenger of Faith doll.

On top of that, the company that created the 12-inch miracle of modern merchandising, One2Believe, says there won't be a second coming as they won't be able to restock the shelves before Christmas.

Sorry, looks like being nice didn't pay off this year either.

I know that many of you are now left wondering what to get for that Christian who has everything. Well, SBE to the rescue (a … (Read More)

Fixing Christmas

Nancy Kennedy December 5th, 2007

Last week I met a man who told me how his community thumbed their noses at the anti-Christmasness of their annual holiday show.

Some had decided they couldn’t sing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” in a public gathering so they rewrote the words.

Ha ha ha, the man said. As the chorus on stage sang, “We wish you a happy holiday,” the audience sang even louder, “We wish you a MERRY CHRISTMAS!”

Last year the big hoopla was over store clerks who said “Happy holidays” so let’s all b … (Read More)
