The Son of Man Came to Serve

John H. Armstrong May 16th, 2011

In Matthew 20 Jesus speaks of the Son of Man coming into the world as a servant. He teaches his followers to serve as he served. No single Christian principle has produced more good in the world than this: serving others. Here is how Jesus teaches his followers:

You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be leader among you must be your … (Read More)

Compassion

Susan Isaacs May 20th, 2010

For many years I thought about sponsoring a child. My sister and her husband had sponsored several Compassion kids over the years, and so had other married friends. I saw their photos on their fridges: smiling in their native clothes, holding up the shoes they bought with the birthday money their sponsors had sent. What a great thing to do, I told myself. Once I had a stable income, a husband and kids to share the experience with. At least, I needed my own fridge on wh … (Read More)

Anger, Ashes & Compassion

Susan Isaacs March 9th, 2010

One March afternoon in my first year of college, I stopped at the school's theater box office to buy tickets to some nihilistic bucket-o-blood experimental theater production. This is an old cartoon I did a year ago. It's one of my personal favorites. Even though I do simple black and white drawing with a basic black pen and sometimes some color, this captures for me how I'm feeling lately. Sometimes I just feel like I'm at the mercy. Fear and tears. But at the same time I feel there is a sympathy, an understanding, a compassion at w … (Read More)

The Greatest Christmas Gift

When my dad returned to Pulaski, Tennessee, after serving in World War II, he couldn't find a decent-paying job. My birth barely a year later only reinforced what my parents already knew–they had no choice but to leave their home and family and this small southern town behind.

Factory towns were booming in the north. So, like hundreds of other desperate families, my parents packed their meager belongings and we moved to Peoria, Illinois, where my dad got a f … (Read More)
