Would You Risk It All for Freedom?

John W. Whitehead June 30th, 2008

“Dissent is the greatest form of patriotism.”—Thomas Jefferson

Let me tell you a story about 56 men who risked everything—their fortunes and their lives—to take a stand for truth.

These men laid everything on the line, pledged it all— “our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor”—because they believed in a radical idea: that all people are created to be free. They believed that the rights we possess are, in their words, given to us by the Creator. At the heart of these rights … (Read More)

For All Frustrated Perfectionists!

Steve Brown June 3rd, 2008

I read the Bible this morning and found something I can hardly wait to share with you, that is, if you're a frustrated perfectionist (all perfectionists are frustrated), care what people think about you, are driven by getting it right and stay awake at night worried that you did it wrong.

That's me, by the way.

You too. I'm just honest about it.

At any rate, I was reading Jesus' parable of the sower in Matthew 13. You will remember that Jesus talks about a sower who goes and … (Read More)

Orwell Cinema: Living in the Land of the Blind

John W. Whitehead May 20th, 2008

"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face."

–George Orwell

It has been 60 years since George Orwell published his novel 1984. Described as political satire, it is, in reality, a political prophecy.

Into the Wild

The Merry Monkey April 7th, 2008

I’ve spent my entire life in a cage. I’m a Rhesus Monkey. I know some of my relatives live in the jungle or in zoos. I’ve seen them on TV. But I work in a lab to help the humans study the effects of blogging on the central nervous system of primates.

You may feel sorry for me, but you shouldn’t. I’m happy. My work is meaningful. Millions of people will benefit from the research in which I’m involved. Plus, I get to spend a lot of time just kicking around on the Internet, wa … (Read More)

Disturbed & Concerned (Part 2)

Steve Brown February 7th, 2008

Maybe it’s an unusual amount of critical emails and letters, maybe it’s the book Erik and I are working on (Three Free Sins) or maybe it’s that my parents potty trained me wrong.

If you were “listening” the last time I wrote here, you know that I was going through my normal, self-centered, anal questions about me.

We all know it’s about me.

I told you that God laughed at me…and that, in his laughter, I felt released from my obsessiveness and started laughing at myself.

Then I tol … (Read More)
