Look, Brown's At it Again!

What follows will sound a bit like what I wrote last month…Sorry.

What I wrote last month about my debate with Shane Claiborne got me thinking (often a dangerous thing!). After I wrote to you, I started to work on a series of sermons about the subject. I will, of course, preach those sermons; but mostly, I wrote them for myself. The titles are: Why Can't We All Get Along?, Why Can't We All Agree? and Why Can't We Sing the Same Songs?

Heaven, Hell & Rob Bell

John H. Armstrong March 8th, 2011

The evangelical world was rocked a bit last week by a debate created by Rob Bell's forthcoming book, Love Wins (Harper/Collins, 2011). I read the posts attacking the book, written by Reformed writers who speak with deep certitude about everything they seem to talk about in opinion pieces. John H. Armstrong January 5th, 2010

The famous historian of theology, H. Richard Niebuhr, once called theological liberalism a religion devoted to "a God without wrath [who] brought men without sin into a kingdom without judgment through the ministrations of a Christ without a cross" [The Kingdom of God in America, (The Wesleyan University Press, orig. 1937; 1988), p. 193].

I can't think of a statement that better sums up much of the problem inside the church in our time. Where once liberal … (Read More)
