Trends That Call Us to Understand Our Mission Differently

John H. Armstrong December 27th, 2011

There is a continual danger that the church will be driven by various cultural and social trends. Evangelical churches are the most susceptible to this danger. "Trendier than thou" is a real problem when our vision of discipleship is stunted and becomes consumer oriented. Given the great desire to reach people with the good news we can easily adapt our methods and approaches in ways that are inconsistent with our message.

Having acknowledged this real problem … (Read More)

The Hope of Future Life

John H. Armstrong October 31st, 2011

I am amazed at how easily people speak of life after death with no real basis for what they think or say. It is apparent that Christian thought has so permeated our culture that even when Christian thought no longer holds prominence in morals, or in day-to-day decision making and living, people still cling to the Christian idea of life after death. Simply put, they believe they will go to heaven, whatever and wherever it is in the universe. Their views of heaven are und … (Read More)

Go out and offend someone!

Steve Brown May 6th, 2009

I spent all day yesterday with Joe Battaglia and John Frost.

Who are they?

I'm glad you asked. Joe is our Italian agency guy, the president of Renaissance Agency in New Jersey, and the least slick person you ever met.

(Tony Campolo asked me a couple of weeks ago if I knew the difference between an Italian wedding and an Italian funeral. I allowed that I didn't and he said, "One less person." Sorry. Tony said it. I, of course, would neve … (Read More)

Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Dream

John H. Armstrong January 21st, 2008

Today is Martin Luther King day in the United States. Though this celebration was met with much opposition in its origins some years ago I am persuaded that it reminds us, sometimes most uncomfortably, of our very long struggle regarding race. It also reminds us of the need to remain ever vigilant to address the injustices and racism that still remain. I personally believe Dr. King was an American icon for social change and that his legacy, though not perfect, is proper … (Read More)

A Lesson from Burkina Faso for American Evangelicals

John H. Armstrong December 31st, 2007

I am an adjunct professor of evangelism at Wheaton College Graduate School. Because of this role I am allowed to teach two or three courses each academic year and this year has allowed me the great privilege of teaching students from all over the world. I sometimes feel as if I am paid to learn from my students. They are bright, eager and very passionate for the gospel of the kingdom. Why else would someone take a master's degree in evangelism if they were not?

In … (Read More)

How Would Jesus Vote?

Erik Guzman September 21st, 2007

With the old conservative Christian war horses getting on or dying off, what does the future look like for the public face of Christianity on the political stage? Is the Church on the verge of getting out of the conservative political pocket and into the liberal one?

Maybe we should ask, "How would Jesus vote?" or, "Would He even bother?" Join Steve and our go-to professional religionist, John H. Armstrong for an insightful and balanced discussion … (Read More)
