Avoiding Some Church Troubles

Tony Campolo January 14th, 2008

Every denomination in America is facing the real possibility of schism because of differing views on the place of gays and lesbians in the Church. Almost all churches, including most Fundamentalist churches, are open to homosexuals attending their worship services. Even homophobic Christians welcome gays and lesbians in the hope that they will hear the Gospel and maybe get saved. Those who are convinced that those with homosexual attractions can be changed through “coming to know Christ,” … (Read More)

The Failure We Foster

Erik October 8th, 2007

Many Christians live in a prison of failure. They aren't free and they don't succeed because they don't think they deserve it.

A misunderstanding of success, humility, and the law mixed up with bad psychology and worse theology have produced churches full of guilty people with a guilty preacher standing in the pulpit, telling the guilty people that they should feel guiltier. Can you think of a better recipe for failure?

Guilt and Isolation

Erik August 13th, 2007

When a Christian leader acts as if he or she has a hotline to God and knows all, don't listen to that leader. You'll end up suffering under tremendous guilt. What's more, when you affirm that kind of nonsense in a leader, you subject him or her to a prison where it's impossible to be free.

On this week's Scandalous Freedom Podcast, Steve discusses the plagues of Guilt and Isolation that result from putting people on pedestals.

The Simpsons Movie & Religion

Erik August 10th, 2007

A recent ChristiaNet.com survey asked Christians, "Is The Simpsons Movie appropriate for Christians?" The majority of Christians polled had not seen the movie, but that didn't stop them from offering their opinion on it (and it didn't stop ChristiaNet.com from sending out a press release on their silly poll). It didn't stop us from talking about it either.

On this week's SBE we talk with Mark Pinsky, author of The Gospel According to the Simpsons, about The Simpso … (Read More)

The Punishing Plagues of Putting People on Pedestals

Erik August 6th, 2007

When we worship at the altar of another human being, we chain ourselves (and our idol) to unattainable expectations that destroy our freedom to risk, think, feel, and be who God created us to be. Wars have been fought, churches have been divided and damaged, and Christians have been manipulated, bound, and hurt, all because we worshiped at some imperfect person's pedestal.

Join Steve Brown for a look at the plagues of Irresponsibility and Disservice that result from deifying authority figu … (Read More)
