Lent Is Not A Self-Help Program

Susan Isaacs February 27th, 2012

Wednesday marked the beginning of Lent, when the faithful honor Jesus’ forty-day temptation in the wilderness by abstaining from booze, sex, and facebook; whereas on the day before, Mardi Gras, the unfaithful go to New Orleans to film Girls Gone Wild videos.

“Mardi Gras” is French for “Fat Tuesday.” The Anglicans call it “Shrove Tuesday” and celebrate by eating pancakes. I wondered if “shrove” was Anglican for “fat.” Pancakes make you fat; just l … (Read More)

The Son of Man Came to Serve

John H. Armstrong May 16th, 2011

In Matthew 20 Jesus speaks of the Son of Man coming into the world as a servant. He teaches his followers to serve as he served. No single Christian principle has produced more good in the world than this: serving others. Here is how Jesus teaches his followers:

Susan Isaacs March 9th, 2010

One March afternoon in my first year of college, I stopped at the school's theater box office to buy tickets to some nihilistic bucket-o-blood experimental theater production. I had to see it for class credit. I noticed the woman behind the glass had a black smear on her forehead. Maybe she had to do scene painting for class credit? So I kindly informed her of the schmutz.

"It's Ash Wednesday," she glared.

"Oh, yes of course!" I apologized. … (Read More)

Imagine an episode of [ping] filled to the brim with copious amounts of witty (and occasionally deep) banter with me, Sharon and our good friend Gordo from Canada. You can almost hear us talking about the latest music or silent retreats or reminiscing about the quality billeting I received in the Great White North from one of my favorite Canucks.

Well, you won't hear any of that on this week's [ping]. That was the show I had planned for you.

Instead, you&# … (Read More)
